      Hi,

To get infected, it does not matter whether you're on Hotmail or Gmail or Yahoo Mail or anything.

To get infected, one of these below has to happen:
-> you clicked a link containing malicious code
-> downloaded & installed files with hidden malicious codes
-> visited a site which streamed malicious code through your browser
-> opened an attachment of an email
-> shared a flash drive or hard-drive which is infected
-> someone planted a malware in your PC while you're away.

      I may missed something above.

Most of the time, to prevent infection is to be AWARE of potential threats and always have the anti-virus/anti-malware/firewall database updated.

I would recommend 3 software only:
-> Webroot - lots of coverage against threats and has light footprint on PC system as well as superquick to react.
-> Trojan Remover ( what others can't get, they can detect )
-> MalwareBytes Anti-Malware ( very focused people behind this )

I dumped all other BRANDED & POPULAR anti-virus because they were hogging my system resources, slow to react and their database are always lagging behind the 3 mentioned above.
