How to start a business from nothing?

Hello Fellow entrepreneurs,

This thread is like a bottle thrown in the sea.

I know it's a general question, but it may give some ideas. And there are so much offers on Internet that seem to be worthy to follow, I feel lost in this wood.

In the past, I have bought several formations. It was not easy to follow because English is not my mother tongue.

My main difficulty is that after taking actions, I mean by that, studying the courses, creating some sites, writing some articles. I am a little shy to expose myself on internet.

I feel like to succeed on internet but at the same time I don't like to be exposed.

I believe there are some people who have achieved a living online, without having to reveal their personal life on internet.

At those people, I ask you :
-> Do you have any recommendation to be successful for a long term on internet, keeping a strong motivation?

I Look forward to hearing you.

Why don't you wanna' be exposed?

This is your line of work, if you are going to be successful then you are going to be pretty proud of yourself, right? Then you are going to want people to know the man behind the success.

But you definetely need to get over it.

Something a mentor once taught me to help with my confidence; Everyday put yourself out there and do one thing that makes you uncomfartable.

So I did it - still do it to this day - and it really helps! The second time you do something it's not neraly as bad.

This way each and every day you are progressing as a person and bettering yourself.

    Thanks Ryanmilligan for your reply,

I guess I don't have any idea about how to add some value in people's life. That's the reason why I don't feel proud enough to expose myself.

Internet is like an addiction for many people. There are some huge opportunities and I spend a lot of time reading and surfing. But I don't build any trustful relationship like that.
    It's not the real life.

If there is a way to improve people's life with internet, tell me how. I guess I 'll be more confident to expose myself.

      Hello Fabien,

There are thousands (if not millions) of people out there in the exact same situation than you as it's very difficult to find out what works in the first place -and then- how long it actually takes to see some results.

The first thing you need to do is to avoid buying any courses that promote any type of "loophole" or special "technique" to make money online. Those courses are designed - most of the time- to make money FOR the product creator rather than the buyer (If I am honest with you).

The second thing to do is to research and decide what you may like doing BUT before that you should have an idea of what it is that you are looking for in your online business... (ie; how much you want to make, how much are you prepared to work, are you going to enjoy it over the "long term", etc)

A tip for you... don't do what the "gurus" TELL you to do... DO what they DO...

Finally - if you can- get a mentor. Someone who can show you the ropes. I wish I had a mentor before I "wasted" 5 years of my life online making nothing to very little...

By the way, your english is fine mate AND yes you can be an "underground" marketer and not being "exposed" if you learn to market online and become an affiliate (I recommend you to start with CPA, let me know if you don't know what that is)

Ask me or PM if I can help in any way. Merci

Well you can always omit any personal details about you online and still be profitable. However, it is really strong branding if your audience is able to connect with you deeply, including the personal level. Business, including online, from my understanding, is about relationships. I think it's forming relationships can be stronger if you expose a little bit more about yourself.

Admitting that you're shy is actually a good thing to start with. It makes you seem real and human. Something that a lot of people can relate to. What else can you share with us? Whatever it is you can share, there's bound to be someone out there who will value it.

To answer your question - start off with something that you are extremely passionate with. Because if you're passionate about it, you're going to love learning it, researching it, applying it, whatever anything to do with it. That also ties in with motivation. If your niche gets you up in the morning, then that's already part of the puzzle solved (but only a part of it of course).

You can market effectively without really exposing too much of your personal life depending on your niche. You don't need to tell anybody how many cats or dogs you have or how many times you've been divorced, etc.

All that really matters is that you continue to love giving the value to the people who love receiving it. That's pretty much as straightforward as I can put it.

It seems to me you have been investing in IM courses, hence the "I don't want to expose myself"...

Look, there is a huge thing right now called the internet, don't know if you ever heard of it. In there you can use a search engine to search for everything you can imagine. I even have a site talking about used surfboards!! I just used a WP theme, and now people can post ads, and I make money with advertising. People love it and I make a good amount of money from it! That simple!

So... Why don't you give it a shot at this "internet" thing in a different market?

I think the best thing you can do is either

1, Browse the WSO Section and spend $20-50 as long as you find something that acutally works for you. Once you have a nice income from this model just re-invest the money to grow even bigger, stronger

2, Basic SEO and Website. Build a website of igh quality, do the on page and off page SEO and committ to it until you start seeing the results.

Whichever method you choose, remember this: Success won't come overnight, but if you STICK with a great method you should be able to make at the very least 1.000$ by the end of this year.

Also listen to this great advice, it helped me a lot too: Everyday put yourself out there and do one thing that makes you uncomfortable.

    Hope that helps,
    Edward

What is your mother tongue and what's the market like where it's spoken? I just ask because if internet proliferation is reasonably high, and if people have credit/debit cards, decent incomes, etc., then perhaps you could make a living marketing online in your own language?

Subpar language skills are a bit of a disadvantage. If people can't read your stuff, they won't. If people can't comprehend your videos, they won't watch. It's all about effective communication, so I would actually suggest doing all you can to improve your English. Practise, study, read English books (that is books written in English and books on the topic of English ), take a course, get some English pen-friends, whatever. It'll pay dividends in the long run, however you look at it, in my opinion.

The alternative, of course, is to outsource content-creation, but this is expensive and not an option for many - at least at first.

As for not wanting to "expose" yourself: you don't have to. Many marketers operate in various niches/markets with entire sites and mailing lists built under pseudonyms (pen-names / aliases). It's not like you have to tell people who you are, where you live, your inside leg measurements, next of kin, etc. :p

    Hi Fabien,

It seems to me like part of your confidence issue is related to your lack confidence with English. That's okay, English can be a very hard language to learn, because it borrows from so many other languages. There is an exception for every rule, or so it seems. Something that might help you is to partner with someone who is mother tongue English to help you make sure what you write makes sense.

Of course, you may have a built in niche of people who speak your mother tongue. Just because the majority of internet sites seem to be in English doesn't mean yours have to be.

As for not feeling comfortable putting yourself out there, perhaps you could do like many other people and create an online persona other than who you really are. Many marketers use a so called "pen name" to do their marketing. Why? Because it may not make sense to present yourself as an expert in many different, unrelated topics. There are other threads on this forum about whether or not to use your real name.

Your name and who you present yourself to be are part of your "branding" just like a big corporation. But, you can operate without using your name. Just look at the big corporations. Who is "Mr. Diet Coke"? There is nobody with that name. (At least I'd hope not.) But most people recognize that brand.

Most of us "internet marketers" use our names and faces to help build trust with people we've never met. We try to write like we're talking to a friend, so it feels like we're talking directly to you. Why do we do that? To help people feel comfortable buying what we ask or tell them to buy. We don't necessarily have easy to recognize brand names, which is why we use our names and faces.

Why not just use someone else's name and face? Well, you can do that, but what if you want to make a video? You'd have to hire the original person to say what you want. It's much easier to do it yourself.

With all of that said, you don't have to tell everyone every detail about your personal life. Michaelangelo Flores said, "You don't need to tell anybody how many cats or dogs you have or how many times you've been divorced, etc." But I'd add that you might if it makes sense to your niche. If you're presenting yourself as an expert on dog training, you'd want to share how many dogs you have, and give examples of how well trained they are, or mistakes you made training them and how to avoid those mistakes. It adds to your credibility or believability.

Good luck in your marketing efforts!

    Best regards,

    Hi Fabien,

    Here's what I would suggest:

    1. Think of what you like doing and offer it as a service here at WF or maybe at sites like Fiverr.

    2. This is an important step: Just do it. Right now man. If you don't do it now there's a big chance that you won't be doing it later. Make no excuse. Just do it.

    Here are some tips:
-Set some goals. Make it attainable to keep you motivated. Like make just one sale today. Exert all your effort in creating that one sale. Just make it happen.

-In your free time/rest time, imagine yourself making that sale. Just imagine it in details. The time, the amount, your reaction, the feeling. The smell of the room. Use your imagination.

Trust me, just doing it and making it happen, there will be AHA moments that you'll have. Those moments will lead you to earning more and more $/month. The money is in the taking action part.

    All the best!
    Craig

    Thanks for your replies guys.

@DireStraits : My mother tongue is french and that's sure there is a market for French people, although the french market is smaller than the US market. The only thing is that we all know that in the US, you are much more advanced than us. There is much more competition but also more opportunities. So I guess it's easier to start with the US market as well as I have a minimum of communication skills.

I have used Aweber to learn how to use it and I am a little bit disturbed to show my physical address at the bottom line of my emails. Because if I show a french address for a US market, the readers can find that strange, no?

@ JimWaller : That's funny to see that the example of dog training is always use to explain things to newbye.

@ CraigSee23 : I think about a service I could provide to the warrior community. For the moment, I don't know which service I will offer. But I am searching. If you have any suggestion, I am open minded.

@ Fernando Veloso : Congratulation for your result with your advertising site.

Ah yes, I suspected this might be the case. Yes, it might look a bit strange, although not necessarily as much of an issue as you might expect? I know that Dr. Mani uses an address in India, where he lives, and he seems to get on just fine.

And I sell stuff to people in the US with an address here in the UK (although not my home address).

Anyway, one way around this problem could perhaps be to rent a US address in the form of a mailbox or forwarding service?

I'm unsure who does them in the US but there'll be plenty of solutions that won't break the bank, I'm sure. Seeing as though you probably wouldn't expect to receive any actual mail to it anyway, you should be able to keep costs to a minimum.

Ryanmilligan is right – get over it, and “do one thing that makes you uncomfortable.” It's like Eleanor Roosevelt said long ago, “Do something you’re afraid of every day.” It really helps to hang that where you can’t miss it when you’re hesitating out of fear to take some action. You’ve got to have a plan and take action!

DireStraits gets to the core of it: your English language handicap. You already have a very good start though, so build on it using the great suggestions above. If you want to target the English-speaking market you need to face that you will be wasting your time if you can’t communicate effectively. Outsourcing absolutely all the writing can present its own set of difficulties as there are lots of folks out there who think they can write and/or have English language challenges of their own. Offering copywriter service from foreign lands with different economies than ours allows them to charge you very little by USA standards, but maybe that’s not “a little” to you for one reason or another.

Meanwhile there’s also a ton to learn about how to get traffic to a website where you do affiliate marketing, and about how to build a list before you could even pick a WF affiliate product to sell. These are bigger, more difficult, more time-consuming challenges than appears on the surface, as most everyone selling something wants you to believe this or that is easy and fast.

But Bingo! CraigSee23 (and possibly others here) suggests Fiverr, where you can offer any kind of service for $5 a pop (you get $4 last time I looked).

Don’t just limit yourself to posting a service in WF. Also go to fivrr.com, create a free account, and just lurk as you thoroughly explore that site. See if anyone there is providing a service that you would also know how to provide. And see if NO one is providing a service that you could provide. This exploration should spark some ideas. Maybe a service for translating English to French? (Be absolutely sure you first understand the English you are translating.) Test your service to see if there’s any demand. If not move on to something else, soon.

Think creatively and with abandon. Figure out what your service would be, and describe it in writing as clearly and as thoroughly as you can. Include a description of the problem(s) you solve with your solution. But don’t post it there. Come back here and post a new thread asking for help to rewrite or edit your statement to fit Fivrr, and offer to pay for it. Then follow Fiverr’s instructions for posting your service there, and see what happens.

You don’t need a list or an autoresponder to provide services through Fiverr. But if you ever need an autoresponder for anything you do, get a Post Office box or a private mail service providing a street address in your community so you don’t need to show your actual street address in your mailings.

Hope this helps, and all the best to you!

      All the best to you,

The reason it gets used as an example a lot is it's an "evergreen" niche, which means there are always people who have dogs they want to train.

In addition, most people have had some type of exposure to dogs and training them, so it is easy to relate to instead of using an example that might not make sense to someone new.

You'll find it's also a common practice to use the word "widget" as a generic term for a physical product used in a hypothetical example. (An example of this usage is "...if you can sell 500 widgets at $2 each, you'll have $1000...")

    Hi, Fabien,

I don't like Aweber showing my address either, but since they are probably the number 1 autoresponder company, you have to play by their rules. I agree with Jim, you don't have to share everything about your personal life, but customers will want to know something about you, and your business.

Last night I was spending time in a big bookstore while my daughter was shopping for clothes. There was no shortage of books on how to start a business. Most said you need at least $20,000 to start.
All the books had several chapters on how to get the $20,000 to $150,000 to get going--borrow from friends, tap a rich relative, mortgage your home, or sell your stuff. I knew a guy who did that and he told me he spent the next two years unable to sleep. It can be very uncomfortable when your business is new and struggling and you still have to worry about paying back a ton of money to some of the most important people in your life.I strongly advise taking the cheap, cheap, cheap path to building your own business. All you need is a sales letter and an order pad. If you hire a professional writer to create your letter, you will up and running for $100 or less.Even if you have to borrow the $100 from rich uncle Ned, you won't lose much sleep over paying it back. And you won't have to wait years to pocket your first profits.

First things first you have to believe in yourself before you take actions. As what I am seeing right now, you are putting limits on yourself which is not good if you are looking forward to achieve something great online.
Consider these following question in planning for a business:

    -how motivated you are?
-what are the resources you have in hand and
-are you willing to take chances?

  • Hi Fabieng. Instead of telling yourself to start a business with nothing, why not tell yourself to start a business with something you have? This will help you pinpoint a list of your existing resources, draw angles which others don't see in those existing resources of yours, and maximize those existing resources to help others solve their problems and satisfy their immediate needs they can't solve nor satisfy on their own...

Instead of asking yourself why present circumstances aren't working for you, your business, your career, your personal life and everything else, why not ask yourself how to take the exact steps to do a 360 and achieve a few steps closer to your dreams and a few leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else?

Asking yourself the "how" questions instead of the "why"s, "what"s, "what if"s and "where"s will help your mind draw exacted solutions to your problems and motivate you to take immediate action to gain the benefits you're aiming for...

If you have time, you can read this blog post of mine and view the video in the post...

  • Hi Fabieng,

When you ask how do you start an Internet business with nothing surely you actually mean very little. To ask here you already have an Internet device of sorts so you have some money to get started.

The first expense is a domain registration which is only a few dollars a year. Next web hosting again a few dollars every month and finally an autoresponder which starts at $1 for the first 30 days for Aweber. Create a squeeze page and promote on social media especially Facebook, Twitter and YouTube if you can create and upload videos linking back to your website?

You could create your own product to give away on a squeeze page to build a list that you can promote follow up related affiliate products to make some money. Then keep re-investing this into improving everything bit by bit and drive more traffic to your squeeze page and sales funnel? Then rinse and repeat.

It costs very little to get started especially if you also invest money into learning from successful millionaires who provide such a service.

Our top recommended trainers in no particular order are:
    1. The Chris Farrell Membership
    2. IM With John Chow
    3. No Cost Income Stream And The Real Coaching Club
    4. Shoe in Money
    5. Bring The Fresh

All have their merits but Chris Farrell is the best for newbies and beginners.

    Hope this helps?

First of all you have to learn how you could make money online, and then look for something that you know and you like among the things that are selling.

Before building your business have to study internet marketing and understand the basics. Don't take action before having enough knowledge, but don't avoid taking action when you will have the necessary knowledge. You have to see how everything works into practice.

I would tell you focus on what you like to do. Then research your niche. Next, set up a sales funnel that will keep your business going for a long time. Make sure to give back to people. People want solutions to their problems!

If your problem is taking action then forget about IM! You'll find thousands of threads on here where thousands of Warriors are telling each other to take action; and why? Because it's the single biggest roadblock in any potential IM career.

If you're really concerned about your identity you could use a pen name, but make sure you check out the legalities surrounding this (there won't be anyone appropriately qualified to answer this on the WF, so don't just ask on here, it'll cause you more problems than it's worth).

Take the plunge and take action on something, anything, today. Action breeds action!

    Hope this helps.

There are maybe a few people that make it in this industry without ever having to reveal themselves -- but I would guess that 90% of people will share some personal details about to their audience.

Now a days customers are buying more and more from people they trust. The only way your future visitors are going to trust you is if they get to know and like you.

It doesn't have to be go in great detail -- just give a brief history about yourself, struggles you faced, and what you are passionate about. This will help them connect with you on a more personal level -- which will result in more sales when you promote products.
