How Can I Accept A One-Time Payment From the UK To US Without Using PayPal?

Can anyone suggest a reliable method for someone in the UK to pay me $5,000?

I definitely don't want to use PayPal because when I last did so, (despite my phoning their "customer service" in advance and explaining the pending payment) they still slapped a 90-day hold on the amount, and then only released it in dribs and drabs.

My bank charges a huge chunk of change to clear foreign checks and they don't accept wire transfers from outside the USA.

Does anyone have an answer?

Thanks - Anne

Maybe try and do escrow? I know you havent sold a website but you still might be able to use it.

        Hi Anne,

I'm only guessing. (My lack of familiarity with this is evident from the fact that I was astonished that a US bank won't accept a wire transfer from Europe.)

My guess is that the fastest resolution here, by far, will be WU (albeit at quite some cost!), and that the cheapest by far (albeit perhaps with some delay) will be to open another account at a bank that does accept international wire transfer.

        Good luck with it, anyway!

          Hi Alexa
Yes, I bank with ING Direct and this policy astonished me too, especially since they have a presence in the UK.

I thought OANDA would fit the bill, but on closer inspection, their signup form is set out just to accommodate currency traders.

I have been thinking along the lines of another bank account - I'll see if anyone can come up with any other ideas before tomorrow..

You might ask your bank about doing an ACH transfer. They are very common, and most banks accept them. I am not sure about the whole Europe thing, but I am kinda thinking that won't matter. ACH transfers are a pretty common way of transferring funds for brokerage accounts and such. Just something else to research and check on.

What about using moneybookers? You'd need a free account linked to your bank. They'd need an account as well. They work like paypal but you get the money inside 24 hours.
