Quick question - what do you understand by the term...

I'm currently creating a product and trying to think of a name for it. I've thought of one idea I like, but I've asked a few of my friends if they understand one of the words in the product name... and most have said no.

So, what do you believe the word "exponential" to mean?

What other synonyms can you think of for it?

Thanks,
James

Exponential? James, just that 2, 4, 16, etc. IF I can remember correctly, you end up with 10,737,418.24 @ 0.02x30^2 -- I am pretty sure.

Usually the arguement goes: Would you like $100,000 now or a PENNY doubled for 31 days? I'd go for the latter...

So, exponential? My suggestion is to 'deep six' the word and find a name your friends understand. IF most people don't get it, that's a bad sign, right off the bat.

    Success,
    Sam

Is that the title or a description? It's great for a description but I think you'll need another title.

I didn't understand it. (Sounds cool though.) Unless you're 100% certain the vast majority of your market will understand what it means I'd go with a new and improved version of your name. When I'm thinking of naming something I always pull out my trusty thesaurus.

By the way to reach $1 Million surely it's $1 doubled for 31 days.

Nope, it's much more than that.

          $0.01 - 1 penny doubled every day, for 31 days = $10,737,418.24

          That's nearly 11 million dollars.

          All the best,
          Michael

p.s. As per the original post, yes, I know exactly what exponential means, but I think it sounds a bit hypish.

That's a lot of money. I must have been thinking of another formula where you double dollars for X amount of days.

You actually pass the million mark on day 21...

I like acceleration or accelerated as an alternative - it connotes continually increasing rate of change. In other words, not only do you go faster, the rate at which you go faster grows as well.

Visualize getting behind the wheel of a hot dragster and popping the clutch. If you watched the needle on the speedometer, not only would the needle be moving, it would be moving faster as you go.

Unlimited exponential growth has some unpleasant Malthusian implications...

Exponential, in the context you're probably using, means, "rapidly increasing rate."

        Some possibly useful alternatives:

        accelerate
        snowball
        runaway
        unlimited
        breakthrough
        explosive
        rapid
        intense
        velocity

          James,

These were all potential words I'd use.

However, I would say "VIRAL" is the best word to use...describing an IM product.

          Hope that helps...

Viral action can create this kind of growth rate, but the term has very specific meanings that separate it from the growth rate itself. Most specifically, the idea of the growth being powered by end users passing it along to others.

I was thinking more along the lines of growing rapid. Not the whole math equation. So I would get it. Makes sense to me.

The mathmatical definition is something very specific.

However, in general conversation in tends to mean that something changes more than proportionally with time.

    Thanks,

    Thanks everyone for the response.

Yes, I was thinking of exponential as a temr to describe "growing at an ever increasing rate". It's the only term I could come up with to describe that but thanks Paul for those alternatives.

I may use one of them instead.

Another alternative is to have a definition of the word on my salespage. I'll finish the product up and see what I can come up with.

    Thanks everyone for your help.

The exponential function is a function in mathematics. Something grows exponentially when it repeatedly grows by multiples of some factor in a rapidly accelerating fashion. So in MLM or internet marketing there is a clear connection. But I'm of a generation who were well taught and I'm not sure if anyone under 35 would get the connection. No, I'm not a mathematician (no chance) I've just had a well rounded education.
I can see a connection - but you might feel that you are being too clever for your own good if few others get the connection.
