List Building Give-away

Hello all.

I run a entertainment (gossip) blog. I am currently renovating my site. I did some quick brainstorming, and though I didn't reinvent the wheel...I thought a giveaway of some sort would be beneficial for me. I figured I would do a giveaway for a new Ipad 3. I know it wouldn't guarantee me long term "repeat" visitors, but seems like it would give me some initial traffic to the newly re-designed site. It would also give me a chance to start list building. I could have them opt in while registering for the giveaway. My question is....do you all forsee any difficulties I may have? I am adding adsense to my site, does this violate anything?

  • Yes, it is a good idea, but there are some potential difficulties.

    1. No one knows who you are, so may doubt the credibility of the iPad3 giveaway. You would need to hook up with someone established in order to give your site credibility. (I.e., to separate it from all those CPA (some scams) iPad 3 giveaways, that charge you $2.00/minute on your phone, etc when yousign up).

    2. Setting up an 'effective' giveaway is harder than you think. People need a 'strong' motivation to promote your site, etc, and while an iPad is nice - you probably won't see the results you want. You would 'need' traffic to 'make' more traffic. (Suppose I should have asked how much 'existing' traffic you have, because that will affect your effectiveness).

    3. Also, make sure you set up the proper rules & regulations. You do need that, as well as things like no purchase required to enter, etc, etc.

Still trying to fine tune my approach on this. So far thinking of doing a popup on the site, where they will enter their name and email address. From there I guess I can have my designer dump the information in an excel file.

@InternetSuccess001: Thanks for the rules and regulations reminder.

      Anyone else have any input?

No need. That's what autoresponders are for. Check Aweber, they offer a free pop-up lightbox splash which captures the name/email and puts it in the database automatically and you can send to your whole list with a few clicks of the mouse.

Is your blog on WordPress? If so, there is a plugin that allows you to add anyone who makes a comment to your list. It could be helpful as you've already got some traffic.

It is...but on the redesign of the site, I am only letting people make comments either using their facebook or twitter logins.

I've read a lot of things about giving away items such as an iPad. A lot of experts are against it because more times than not you just end up getting people that simply want a free iPad. These people generally don't care about your topic or niche and they don't want to buy anything from you. If you're just looking to expand you list, traffic etc I guess its fine. If you're looking to build a list of targeted BUYERS, it might not be the best approach.

    Just my thoughts.

Another thought...an iPad 3 is going to cost you $500. What about putting a couple hundred bucks into PPC and driving targeted traffic to a squeeze page? I got a list of 57 subscribers off a $100 Microsoft credit. Multiply that by 5 and I'm willing to bet you probably wont get 250+ followers from your iPad 3 giveaway.

GetResponse has a feature called GetSubscribers. You can buy leads from them and I believe it works by showing some ads to people that subscribe to GetResponse lists and give them similar options. You can buy 1000 leads for $360. That might be a better way to spend your money. I've never tried it so I can't comment on how well the leads will convert:
