Affiliate marketing VS Product creation

Hey,A quick question here.

What is better to start with, straight to affiliate marketing or to creating your own product and building a list and THEN affiliate marketing?

Or build niche sites and start affiliate marketing with them?(adsense,clickbank,amazon,ebay,cpa,etc...)

?

It is generally better to start with what you know how to do.

Do you already know how to do any of these things?

If so, then pick one and do it.

If not, go learn one of them.

I started with affiliate marketing and now have my own products. But I have known folks who started off directly with their own products and still made it big.

  • I reckon both. It doesn't matter too much as long as you build your own skillset and achieve mastery of your own craft. In other words, if you are an experienced and skilled marketer, you can market pretty much anything, whether it's your own or an affiliate product. Just work on your own set of skills and knowledge and in the end, you'll end up creating your own products anyway.

It depends, if you're passionate about distributing a certain product or especially a service you are to provide then I suppose you would have to carefully tailor your promotional articles, this can be done quite easily if you're skilled however like building a website for your product for example.

Affiliate marketing is definitely easy to start with – that’s why it is recommended to beginners so often. But the irony is that it’s really one of the most difficult ways to make money online. Your greatest enemy in this case is the cutthroat competition.

Product creation may sound intimidating because as a beginner you may have no idea how this all online business thing works, let alone creating products. But as a matter of fact, it’s one of the easiest ways to make money online, as counter-intuitive as it sounds. And there are several reasons for that.

I'd suggest both. Start with the PLR free report to get things started, so you can start getting signups as quickly as possible, then add the 7-day mini course into your followups. Judicious use of followups is a major driver of list responsiveness.

I have done plenty of affiliate marketing which worked well enough, but I am now creating my own products.

I could very easily see myself creating products to sell to my list as well as pursuing joint ventures with product owners of related and complimentary products which would still actually put me in the category of affiliate marketing.

It seems to me, that the natural order of things for most people is to begin with affiliate marketing, learn the ropes, and then begin creating their own products and thereafter, continuing to develop their own products as well as the aforementioned JVs.

It all depends if you have the right experience, skills and budget. The more of it you have the better it is to make your own product.

The big advantage of starting with affiliate marketing is that you get an opportunity to indirectly learn how a profitable company works. Also it teaches you marketing before product creation. Not getting that lesson correctly is why most products fail. Inventors that "think" something will work.

I suggest you do the following:

    1. Start with affiliate marketing. Go to a public library and read a few books on online marketing.
    2. Implement what you learn and see what works. Make notes and record your progress.
    3. Progress to making your own product when you see an angle in the niche that has not been covered yet. Ideally a product that complements, not competes, with the product you have had success being an affiliate.

And, remember to get back to this forum often to ask questions.

its always atricky one because affiliate marketing is generally best when you build a list and just sending traffic to a sales page is a waste of your time

saying that you need a bit of knowledge to be able to create your own product, knowing the basics will get you through

personally i started off with affiliate marketing and struggled big time so i can talk from experience. If i did it again i would just create my own low priced product first so i can start building my customer list

affiliate marketing can work but like i said without doing it with a list your thowing a lot of money away

so i would create your own little product, doesnt have to be groundbreaking but something of value and which is a solution to a problem and then go from there

It's a popular and thorny subject, but these are often slightly "tricky" discussions, in this forum.

Partly because (as seen above, in places) it's traditional for arguments which actually apply equally to product vendors and to affiliates to be stated/implied to be "advantages of being a vendor".

As an affiliate, I can build my own real, asset-based, residual-income producting business with complete product flexibility, promoting whatever product(s) I like, whenever I like, without my business ever being dependent on the continued success, availability and reliability of any specific individual product at all.

And if a much better, newer, cheaper product suddenly comes along from some other new vendor, that'll be an advantage, not a disadvantage, for my business.

And I don't have to develop the products.

And I don't have the same customer-relations, transaction-handling, back-up, product-design, packaging/presentation, formatting, research and other problems that vendors have.

Being a simple kind of guy, I find it much easier just to be an affiliate. When one product bombs or fizzles out, it's not a problem to just dump it and promote another. No muss no fuss, compared to all the headaches of having to develop, provide customer service, refunds, etc for one's own products. In the time it takes to create one product, I can better use the time for marketing and earning from tens of thousands available now.

If your asking this question then you should probably start as a affiliate. Product creation involves copywriting, graphic design, traffic generation, building funnels, building a list and much more. As an affiliate you do still have to write compelling presale copy and drive traffic but you do not have to build as deep as funnels as a product owner.

There are more complex skills involved as a product owner. The biggest advantage of why its better to be a product owner verses affiliate is that product owners most profitable activity is recruiting affiliates to do most of the selling for them. Ask any highly successful product owner how they make most of their money and the answer whether they tell you or not will be from their “affiliates.”

Then when you start to make money, create a product where you teach people what you have done to do really well with affiliate marketing.

This is actually a double edged sword.
Many will tell you that affiliate marketing is the best way to start, and they are probably right

    BUT!

If you begin with making your own product BASED upon the affiliate product you are promoting it will help you in a few ways.

    1) You can build a list with a Lead Gen page then send on to Affiliate Product
    2) If you make something complimentary to the main product you can break down your own smaller product into a "cheat sheet" for the LG page, then your complete content as a BONUS to the affiliate purchase when they buy via your link.

In niches outside IM, WAHM etc, then this step is not always required, but if you are in this niche, then it pays to have a product of your own that is a bonus they CANNOT get elsewhere as it then generally ensures the sale (if its a quality product of course).

You don't need to re-invent the wheel, just add value to the original or help with missing components that the original creator failed to include.

Later as you grow and build more within the same niche (if you choose to do so), then you:

    A) Add more products into your own funnel which helps on ROI when running paid traffic campaigns

    B) Ultimately you can release your own full product, build your own affiliate army and have larger pay days!

Yes, you can make affiliate sales without doing this, but building a list (1) and selling your own products (2) generally leads to bigger pay days. PLUS, you can keep leveraging your own products to sell more in affiliate sales as well as your own direct sales etc.

    Hope that helps?

I know this Thread is over 3 years old but I will comment anyway

I think it is prudent to start out with Affiliate Marketing and get your feet wet with that.

You can get a feel for it and see if it is something you can get better and better at and eventually move on to Product creation

If you are expert in a niche which is a subset of a market where people spend money quite often and significantly, then you can go for product creation.

Otherwise it is better to start with affiliate marketing. There are many methods for affiliate marketing like niche sites, blogging, list building, cpa, direct linking with cpc etc etc. You can start with the method that suits your skills and resources.

However, you always have an option of product creation down the road when you become proficient with affiliate marketing and have built a significant list of subscribers.

  • Hello chaoslinker007

Create your own product, it is definitely the best thing.

If you can not do it but you can start with affiliations, so in the meantime you can have a list, and then learn how to create a product of your own.

Someone dug up an old thread,

It all depends on what you know and what your current skills are. If you are starting from scratch and know very little about marketing, I would definitely start with affiliate marketing first to learn the ropes.

You can get started at a lower cost and promote products that are proven to sell compared to starting your own un-tested products

Once you get good at affiliate marketing and making money then you should move onto your own products.

It's usually best to test your niche with affiliate products first to build your list of subscribers.

Once you have a loyal responsive list of 500 to 1000 subscribers in that niche, then you survey your list for product creation ideas by asking them what problem will they pay you for to have solved,

Then you create your products around solving their most popular problems in that niche.

      Hey there,

Product creation usually has a higher profit margin as most affiliate program owners still keep a large portion of the commission payment for themselves. But along with higher profit comes exponentially higher amounts of R&D, which can equate to higher levels of unwanted stress hehe.

If you have the infrastructure in place, as well as the desire and know how, I think being the top man on the totem pole is the way to go. Cheers!

  • Hi,

I think creating your own product provided you can create one that is high quality and targets a hungry crowd of thousands every month solving their problems is better than affiliate marketing. The reason is that affiliate marketing is only an easy quick way to make money if you have mastered traffic generation.

The biggest problem most people have is getting targeted traffic to their offer which as an affiliate you need to do to make any sales? Whereas selling your own product doesn't always require you to get traffic because you get affiliates to send the traffic to your site. That way you make sales and build a mailing list faster.

Anyone can write an ebook for example and creating a few training videos is also not that difficult. Simply pick a niche that excites you, research it online and soon you too can become an expert for most prospects who need a problem solved or question answered.

That is what I think and I recently watched Alex Jeffreys say this same thing too and he makes lots of money selling his own products.

This all depends really on what your selling, budget and business plan , you will mostly always make more of a ROI with affiliate products as they dont usually cost you anything to start selling although with your own products you have more of a potential to grow that product, if you have a small budget i would start with affiliate products and market them to relevant potential customers , see what sells and then create your own product, but watch out for items that are hot one minute and then not the next

1ST: Check the link in your sig. The structure is wrong that's why there's a "page not found" message when people click on it.

2nd: I'd write my own ebook. But that's only because writing comes easy to me. Which lifestyle would you prefer? After you've found your answer, proceed and make it happen - and dont give up.

Start from affiliate marketing. You will learn tons of things like:

What are good and bad products.
What type of sales page convert
what are best ways to generate sales etc.

Once you have learned and earned enough from affiliate marketing, create your own product in the same niche that you were already promoting. This is to minimize the chances of failure.

You need to build list in any case whether you are selling your own product or affiliate products.
