Another reason not to use GoDaddy... Wikipedia transfers its domains to markmonitor from godaddy!

I never liked godaddy...

Good to know that even wikipedia doesn't...

  • That's interesting, but only because you seem to think Wikipedia has some sort of moral authority. Correct me if I'm wrong.

In registering domains, I like godaddy but I dislike them as a hosting provider. I prefer hosting providers which have cPanel interface.

GoDaddy had a bad reputation long before it's owner shot some elephants or supported SOPA.

It has always catered to the scummier underside of the Internet. Wikimedia foundation isn't part of that scummier side of the Internet and so has joined it's peers with a respectable registrar and brand management company.

They are using the same company used by Google and over 50% of the fortune 100 companies on the Internet. They stopped using one of the two registrars used mostly by the criminal element (Namecheap being the other).

Only spammers and scammers talk bad about Godaddy.

Once I would have created a Fortune 500 web property, I promise to trunsfer my domains to MarkMonitor too. Until then, my sites are going to stick with criminals aka NameCheap and GoDaddy and pre-paid for 10 years ahead that costed me cool $3 per year.

Choosing a domain registrar depends on the value of your domain. Anyway, never have the same company as domain registrar and as hosting company, have 2 different companies. Why? There are several reasons, it is not the place to talk about it.

I chose to move my domains from Godaddy because the site is deadly slow on a slow Internet connection and because of SOPA issue. To say that you wouldn't use Godaddy or Namecheap because some criminals may register domains there is a bit ridiculous.

Criminals go to church, shop at malls, buy gas at gas stations, eat out at restaurants ... well, you get the drift. Criminals do just about everything that everyone else does, and then some. You going to stop doing business with all them too?

Sure. Why would I do business with criminals just because they go to church or shop at malls? A criminal is a criminal.

A bad neighborhood is also a bad neighborhood. Nigeria is blocked from buying from me. Why? Because most transactions from there are fraudulent.

Two VC angels I know do a whois on a domain for a potential investment. If they see GoDaddy, they laugh and move on. If they see Enom, they check to see if it is Namecheap. It it is, they move on.

They want to see MarkMonitor or Network Solutions. That's where legitimate businesses register their domains. Just do some random whois information and correlate it yourself.

      Scams = Godaddy or Namecheap
Real players = Mark Monitor, Corporate Domains, or Network Solutions

Are their exceptions? Of course. I am sure there are some honest Nigerians. Does it help my business to ban Nigeria anyway? You bet it does.

Godaddy and Namecheap aren't criminals, therefore you would not be doing business with criminals.

I'm not much interested in what VC angels do. Indeed, there are plenty of criminal "angels" as well. Here's two scenarios.

Warning Signs You May Be Dealing With a Decoy Angel Investor Or Venture Capital Fund

There are thousands of people who register sites on both Namecheap and Godaddy that are not scammers. Don't do business with them if you don't want to, but many of us do and many of us are not criminals.

Do you do business with Paypal? I'm fairly certain that there are some criminals who use Paypal also. Saying you don't do business with someone because it's possible that a criminal also does business with them is a bit over the top.

I dislike godaddy because they are basing their business on one person. Every mail
comes with "Sincerely, Bob Parsons" and you know that he has nothing to do with it.
    I really don't like that.

I stopped using these guys year or so ago.

I now have a host, where I can call him up at 2am in the morning and he knows me by first name. That is the sort of relationship you need to have with your host. Trust me

Until four or five years ago, I had one like that, too.
It was a very well respected hosting solution, and a fair number of the people you know from here on the WF were using his services as well.

      Then... he died.

He was the sole proprietor of his hosting business, and that business couldn't pay fees to his suppliers, pending settlement of his estate. We were about 30 days getting everything resolved so we could get our hosting services back.

You don't need a personal relationship with your web hosting service... you need a business relationship.

EDIT: I just realized that my response might imply that I use Godaddy web hosting. I don't, and won't.

You can not have a positive relationship with a host that is communicating poorly with the clients, Period.
The never seek a solution if you haven't payed on a exact day. All companies in my country do that.
Instead they delete all your web files on the server, a few days later the payment day.
They can restore the files, but it will set you back 150 USD.

They also deleted my hosting, when I transfered another domain. Not the one I had hosted with them.
    No clear warning.

My advice. Stay away from Godaddy.

      That's very typical GoDaddy behavior.

What always surprises and disappoints me is the few people who defend behavior like this and point out that it's the customer's own fault for not reading the terms of service. The fact is that other hosts don't behave in this avaricious and hostile way.

Well, this thread's from 2012, and there are 100 others like it, here. The surprising thing is that the dreaded GoDaddy has any Warrior customers left at all. Personally, I'm delighted to have left them behind nearly 5 years ago and never to have to do business with them again.
