choosing a host--pay more-get more? Or just hype?

Hello. This is my very first post, after so many hours reading I barely know which end is up.

Okay, so my deal, if you would be so kind as to give any input, is that I am trying to create two business websites designed using artiseer and joomla (both of which are new programs that I am learning). We are willing to pay more for hosting if we get more for the money (not dedicated server more, but more). But of course would rather not spend if not necessary.

I have spent literally dozens and dozens of hours just researching this hosting question alone. So I thought I would finally ask the Q here. I've read you should have separate C-class, then no separate C-class (both from authorities who seemed to know what they were talking about). Then I have read here that it doesn't matter, etc.

So then I read a review at web host magazine (sorry cannot post like).

They have hosts ranked by "cheap," "personal," "business," etc.

So I figured the more expensive business sites would probably be better. But I have called hostgator and bluehost (both this weekend, and both had people to talk to me live), couldn't reach biz hosts by phone. So I waited til today. Even today getting the run around from biz hosts sites (cannot talk to real person about potential purchase of hosting plan). Then I read other reviews saying cheap sites are oversold.

What is a girl to do?! Help!!!!!!! Please tell me: should I spend more on a pricier host, if my obvious goal is SEO, and I plan to spend a LOT LOT LOT of time optimizing and developing content on these sites...thinking in terms of years not weeks or months.

I want to start with the right host. Please help!!!!

I have gazillion other questions but this hosting think is preventing initial upload and making me grouchy.

Thank you!

"business hosting" is much like saying "commercial property" in the offline world. It surely doesn't mean you get more / better.

If you are truly serious about getting better hosting you are probably looking at a vps server. But don't go searching for cheap vps, that will just give you a lot of people selling shared hosting as a vps

The vps plans at a place like hostgator start at about $35, but you probably need the one that is about $45 and has cpanel.

Thank you for answering! I looked at hostgator, they two types of upgraded sort of options.

One is VPS, and I have read about this option and understand some of its benefits.

The other is where they sell (on a separate site "hosted by hostgator), called seohosting.com, where they sell blocks of separate c-class IP address (e.g., 5 separate C-class Ips for $35). I'm not a techy but have figured out what that means...some say YES you need this, others say no. Hostgator customer service recommend this option.

Then I read somewhere that the hosting companies just sell this upgrade and it really doesn't matter, which is what the guy from bluehost said (of course this is convenient given they don't sell upgraded options).

We would ideally like to link at least between two different sites and maybe want different IP addresses for those (not sure if good idea) but we want to have basically a joomla website and a WP blog, for both businesses, with links between them, and not get dinged for linking between two of our own sites.

Does that change your thoughts? Also I'm on hold with hostgator, 30 min estimated wait time.

FYI not sure if it matters but both businesses are small local businesses (although one *hopes* to gain biz in two states), providing services, will not sell products online.

Goal with bigger business is to develop serious quality content, not sure this approach will work but that is the goal.

Thank you again for any thoughts. I'm the next caller!! Woohoo!!

Go with a company that you can easily upgrade from a shared hosting plan to a VPS when you need to like InMotion Hosting or HostGator.

Sorry to be such a pest but my concern is that if we don't start with what we need, then site may get dinged, or upload too slowly, or get nabbed for interlinking between sites, etc...and then never make it out of the box.

Just spoke with HG support (seems really good despite some negative reviews on net), he said no need for VPS or separate c-classes right now. He said VPS benefits are ability to customize (which I can't do anyway bc no tech knowledge) but downside is speed unless you spend over $100-$200 per month to get both speed and customization. I think that's a little more than we want to invest for an uncertain dream. I meant we could pay $20-$40 instead of $10 if that would help but not looking to spend hundreds.

So gosh darned confused but thinking of going with baby plan bc at least they answered my call and I can upgrade later. Thanks to everyone for giving advice...I hope I'm not screwing up bc they have some negative reviews on net but hopefully I will not run into problems with sharing space.

Just do it... it will be fine. Don't worry about a few negative reviews. They have over 500k customers. I am sure some of them are ticked off about something.

Their support is the best in the business short of going with a fully custom solution.

in order to get the better link juice (value) for linking your sites together they need to be on separate class c ip's. YOu can do that with HG seohosting.com. It can also be done on a vps by just using add-on ip address and most companies can offer you separate class c ip's. But you will have to talk to each one about that.

I write for a hosting site and have put up over 1500 posts on the subject, but still would not consider myself an expert. However, I can advise you from personal experience and maybe it will help a little.

Personally, I would choose HostGator because they have three levels of shared hosting. I use their top level and have two accounts with them. This gives you a private SSL certificate and dedicated IP address along with many other features. You can even use the toll-free number they give you, if you need one.

HostGator is one of the largest (if not the largest) and they provide great support. I have always gotten an answer from them very fast and the live chat option helps quite a bit.

BlueHost is also very good, but the problem I have is, what do you do if you decide to upgrade to VPS hosting in the future? In addition, they don't offer a monthly plan like HostGator does. You have to pay for at least a year with BlueHost. They are very reliable and I have heard many good things about them, but they don't offer the hosting options HostGator does.

I would certainly advise against Biz Host if they are giving you the run around. If they do this when you are not even a customer yet, just imagine how bad they will be when you need some type of support?

My advice, choose HostGator and start with shared hosting. Then, if you find that VPS hosting will help, you can upgrade without needing to transfer to a new company.

Thank you to everyone who has replied.

Benjamin, this is what I am going to do. Can I ask you--would you get a separate biz account for both businesses, or just rest both domains in a single biz account? Meaning totally unrelated businesses, two to four domains each (not sure yet), neither utilizing e-commerce. One biz account? Or two? Or baby since we aren't selling products? Thank you!! And you were right about the customer support. They have been good and I'm not even a customer yet. One concern is you can only transfer domains for 30 days, and I've bought quite a few through GD that I might want to transfer in future (for different cities if we choose to market that way)...bluehost will transfer unlimited for free but I've read a lot of negative stuff about them charging credit cards after cancellations and refusing to give refunds. That kind of thing is not cool. Thank you again for very helpful info!

I'd really like to get this nailed down so I can get onto my many other questions on this here wonderful resource of a website forum.

I like Westhost, their cloud hosting plan is very easy. Dedicated ips, cpanel, easy to upgrade or downgrade within minutes. Very good support.

Thanks again to everyone. I also checked Westhost and their site looks enticing but some bad reviews out there. I guess I'm just tending toward the known name and may regret my decision.

So...I've decided on GH, Biz plan, one other Q--I do not yet own the domain I want to purchase. GD is cheaper to buy the domain, which is more of a factor bc I want to buy for 5 years...can anyone tell me the answer to next burning Q: is there any downside or difficulty to pointing a domain from GD to GH? We have another domain that has been pointed for several years, so I know it can be done, but does it affect SEO?

Thank you!! Please help soon if you can...wanting to get the party started and sign myself up and stop wasting time studying hosting. TY!!
