Question About Segmenting Email Lists

Hi

I am trying to work with my list to make it more targeted for my subscribers. I use Aweber for this. I keep hearing about "making multiple lists" and "segmenting your lists", but I don't know the literal steps of actually managing this or what that whole process is.

I understand how to see if they've clicked certain links, opened emails, etc, and I know how to make a segment.

However, all I can see that I can do from there is to send broadcast emails. If someone clicks on a certain type of link and I want to send them more on this type of information than they would get otherwise, am I only able to send broadcasts from this point, or is there some way to send a different set of followups to this segment?

And...is there some way to set this up automatically per link (they click it an automatically get an additional set of emails) , or do I have to check manually every week or every day to see who's clicked certain links?

I do not have my own products, I'm an affiliate. And I typically send people to a page on my site (not the direct link in my email). Maybe there's something I could do differently there, but I can't tell just because they clicked that they have also purchased something. Just that they have enough interest to click, and maybe a little more targeted info would convert them at some point.

I would appreciate help on working with my list in a way that won't drive me crazy or overwhelm my list readers.

Thank you!

It doesn't just pertain to segmenting your "list", because, after all, you can create multiple lists in AWeber (I use them too). As in, if there are different demographics between buyers, or they for some reason vary from "this list" to "that list", you can create multiple lists period. They don't have to be "parts" of an individual list.

This way you can narrow down who should receive what offers. As in, list A might be interested in product A, but list B might be interested in product B. You wouldn't want to promote product A to list B. Know what I mean?

What exactly does this mean, in the literal steps you take? I already have their email addresses. I want to divide them by clicking behavior once they've signed up, possibly opening behavior as well.

Is there a process in Aweber for "making a new list out of emails addresses you already have"?

I already know why I want to do this. I need some kind of "how to" procedure that literally tells me "go here, click this tab, select these boxes, and from there you can..."

I'll I've seen is a way to send broadcasts to a segment. I don't know if this is what's called "making multiple lists" or not. And from seeing that, I can't do nearly the same things with the segments as I can with the actual main list I have.

Please, somebody just speak plainly about the actual process.

      Thanks.

Segmentation can be used for numerous things and it makes all the difference when you do it right.

First you need to install the Email Web Analytics, it can be found here:

How Do I Install Email Web Analytics? :: AWeber Knowledge Base there is also a nice video there.

    Segmentation
    1. Use web page tracking. We'll track which pages of your site subscribers go to. You simply need to look for whether or not subscribers land on your order confirmation page.
If you only sell one product, or all your products are the same price, this is sufficient. It doesn't, however, allow you to easily see on what days/weeks/months your campaigns generate the most revenue (the 2nd option does that).
    2. Use goal tracking. This takes a couple steps to set up, but it lets you track the revenue your email campaigns generate over time. It also lets you segment subscribers based on how much money they spend (which you can see in their subscriber records).
Another cool feature I love about aweber, not sure if you are aware of it, is the fact that you can see your email open rate, then filter those people who haven't opened your email, change the title and resend to the.

    rgb -

Thank you, that is more what I was looking for. And I don't think I ever knew about the email analytics thing. Probably makes a whole lot more sense when that's in place.

I've also just started to filter people who aren't opening anything. Trying to sort that out now also so I'm only really working with people who are interested.

Do I just delete the people who never open anything, or just keep them on a separate segment forever?

    Thanks.

Don't delete anybody, there is no reason to do that, offer more free information and try to identify their needs and help them for free, then you will get that segment of your list to be more responsive.

Also if they dont buy try to use them in anther way, for instance, offer the product for free if they leave a comment with they facebook account "like making them work for it" if you know what I mean. it sort of a win win.

      Please Excuse my Cliché

but remember people love to buy, but they hate being sold to.

There's a difference between AW's advanced analytics, and the standard that comes with it. Support can clear the air on which will work for you, based on your current subscription.

What it means, using the regular (non-advanced) form or AW is you can create "Automation" rules, based on user activity on that specific list.

So when a customer subscribes to one list --> unsub the from your other list.

This is helpful (and we use it ourselves) to "move" prospects from a prospect list, to a buyer list... and remove them automatically from the prospect list... immediately after they purchase.

You can also, for example, set a goal for a subscriber so if he/she does a certain action, like buy a product , you can move them automatically on a different list, which you can call "the buyers list" this will be in time your biggest asset.

People who buy once, they are more likely to buy again.

Aweber support stuff will help you with all this.

    your welcome ELK,

I also have a system set up, that I recommend to you. Find genuine lists owners, not necessarily ad swaps... but based on the same idea.

    1. Lets say you have 1000 subscribers
    2. You send 3 emails per month.

Try to find people with similar list like yours and join forces, so every now and then you send an email on their behalf and they in return will send email from you.

A good way to test/compare lists is to send the exact same email.

Aim to find 5 of these people (I am sure you can just from warrior forum)

This is not exact science so use your best judgment to scale up things asap.

segmenting your lists is vital when you have and selling your own products because you of course want to segemnt your prospects from your customers

if you are just an affiliate then you can still do this but its a lot more work and hassle

an effective way is to offer a bonus if they buy but tell them they have to email you with a receipt confirmation

once you receive the receipt you can then send them to an opt in form where they can then download there product from (so this is how you can build your buyers list by being an affiliate)

also segmenting can be done when you send out emails. If certain people dont open your email you can then drill down and then ONLY email the ones that didnt open

(you can also do this with people that open but dont click)

you can drill down quite a few times this is an extremely effective way for increasing your profits

DONT ALWAYS think if someone doesnt open your email they are not interested. They may be busy and they may of just forgot to open your email or they may of been out and then when they get home your email may of been pushed down the list in there inbox

lastly if you use the "automation" feature in aweber you can automatically unsubscribe someone from list A when ever they subscribe to list B

this is important when someone buys so aweber will automatically put them on your buyers list making your business work on auto-pilot (this is vital)

hope this answers some of your problems

    paul
