Amazon affiliate marketing, coding, etc for newb

I want to learn more about being an Amazon.com affiliate. What has worked for you? Most of the affiliate sites/plugins that I have looked at look really cheap.

Can anyone share some strategies, lessons learned, learning links, etc?

Towards the end of that thread Sojourn ( Erica Stone) gave another link an old thread that also has a ton of great advice but it will take some time to read that thread. it is pretty long.
