WORK from home...be your own BOSS...get started NOW

It is a WF tradition to attempt to make at least 1 intelligent and helpful post per 1000. This is my attempt.

Notice the three words with all capital letters in the thread title. Those are the three words I want to focus on in regards to each short phrase.

WORK from home. - I think way too many people skip over the first word of that phrase and focus on the last word. You can't skip the WORKing part of WORKing from home. It just won't lead to success.

Businesses only make money when they provide a product or service that someone values more than the money they have in their wallet. In order to provide value, there is pretty much no way around WORKing.

be your own BOSS - I really think this is the one people screw up on the most. Being your own BOSS is not a job title you have, it is a responsibility. Just like your old boss at your old job. He didn't just get to say he was boss, he had to do the things a boss is required to do.

Now that you are your own BOSS, you have to take on all those responsibilities of being a boss.

Remember when your old boss would direct how you used your time everyday when you came in to work? Remember how he seemed to have a plan for his workers everyday that would help the company earn a profit? Now that stuff is your job.

When you woke up this morning, not only were you the worker who had to complete the tasks of the day, but you were the BOSS too. You were the guy who was supposed to have a plan for you (the worker).

If you don't provide a plan for you (the worker), more often than not, the worker in you will act like the boss is on vacation. Is he?

I can promise you that if you fail at your job of being your own BOSS. You will fail at your job of being a productive employee.

Get started NOW - Nike had it right...Just do it. You are going to make mistakes, but none of them are going to actually kill you. So why are you so afraid of making these mistakes?

A year from now, those small marketing mistakes or web design mistakes you make today will be a distant thing of the past. Unless of course you don't start making them until a year from now.

If you continue to wait until you are "ready" to start this project or that new system, that day will probably never come. Don't look back and wish you had done more. Do more NOW.
#boss…get #home…be #started #work

I believe that I have made at least 1 intelligent and helpful post already, and I only have just over a couple hundred posts, so maybe I am slightly ahead of the "WF tradition"?

To underscore the three words you highlighted, I need to be a working boss now! No pussyfooting around today. This boss has lots to do and I need to get to it!

    Ron

p.s. By the way, congrats on the 1k posts!

Great post. I never really thought about the second point before. You really do need to learn to manage your time and plan out your strategy if you want to succeed. That seems to be the most difficult part for me right now. I think getting in the right mindset is key to overcoming this particular obstacle.

I struggled a bit in that area and the only way I could overcome it was to actually set my alarm clock and begin my day just as I did when I had that day job.

Get up, pour myself a cup of coffee, enjoy a few sips, then hop in the shower, get dressed and prepared (all those things we women do while getting ready) and start my day with a work schedule including my breaks, lunch hour, etc.

It may seem a bit extreme to some, but that was how I needed to train my mind in knowing it was time for work, lol!

I always found it hard as a boss at start, cause no one was there to kick you up the arse and get moving.

We all know that if you do not take action online you will not see any results. So that is why I have a few a mentors that I try to report to, they kick me up the arse if I need it. Sometimes we can get slack, so always remember as a boss, to take action and not slack off. That can hurt your business badly.

Yes, totally agree on this one. Sometimes, the best way to get moving is to get one or two mentor/bosses who will kick you up to get the momentum going again.

Very good post and I agree wholeheartedly with all of it.

While I haven't started working from home full time yet, I'd like to think that I'm pretty good at being my own boss when it comes to my business.

One thing I started to do about 5 months ago that has REALLY helped me become my own BOSS....

For a couple of hours I put my boss hat on and think about exactly what I need to do in the coming week. If I have a new site to launch for instance, I will create a word document with a list of action items and a check box next to each one.

      eg.

      1. Complete keyword research
      2. Find Domain
      3. Choose site layout
      4. Write 1 article for each page (800-1200 words)
      5. Format articles
      6. Place images
      7. Place affiliate links

I then print off the list and until it's completed I don't do anything else. I act as an employee of my business until that job is done and then, and ONLY then, do I think about anything else.

Since doing this I've found that I've really cut out those time wasting habits like checking to see if there's a better way to do something, and then subsequently spending an hour and a half reading through forums and scouring the internet for information on it.

You don't realise how much time you spend being unproductive until you become your own boss.

        Hi Ben,

Thank you for sharing. Quick question, don't you do any link building for your new sites? Thats' my biggest time waster.

          You're welcome.

That was just an example of the kind of lists I use. To answer your question though.. I outsource most of my link building. For new sites I like to do a press release, some directory submissions and social bookmarking in the first week. After that it's mainly BMR posts, guest blogging and some blog commenting.

              Hi David :

I have been liking most of your posts and replies and your contribution in WF is really amazing. Congrats for crossing 1000 posts ! No one can disagree with your excellent points.

Perhaps I would like to add one point on "Procrastination". Why is that people who are working from home have the habit of procrastinating their jobs to do ? Can this happen in the corporate world ? Will your boss allow you to pass to work to be done today to tomorrow ? This is another important area, where we need to work on.

              What do you say ?

Great post David and congratulations on passing the 1,000 mark. Time management is definitely the hardest part of working from home. I have a similar approach to Ben except I use an Excel sheet with days horizontally and tasks vertically. I populate the Excel sheet with my tasks for each day. Then once I complete a task I colour the cell in and move onto the next one.

I find writing or typing up task lists is an incredibly powerful tool when it comes to managing your time. Even if I know what I need to do that day in my head, writing it down or typing it on the Excel sheet seems to make it get done a lot quicker.

      Hi, David

Congrats on reaching your 1000th post(with your sanity still intact)

I agree wholeheartedly on the part about being a good boss, since this is one of the areas I lack in the most. I guess I'm just too easy on my employee!:p

Just a couple of things real quick:

      1. Did you make sure to post this on your blog and allow it to be indexed first before posting it elsewhere; or did you post it here first?

      and
      2. - No, in case you are wondering, you CAN NOT put this post into an article spinner and spin it for your 2000th post!

Ok, I'll hush 'fore I get something started!

      Again, great post and congrats.
Looking forward to your next 999 posts full of pure, unadulterated B.S.!

Just kiddin, I generally enjoy your input on whatever topic you are addressing. I like your unbiased approach to a lot of different matters.
      Keep up the good work!

Great article. You are right. When we say we are our own boss it just does not translate to us being able to do anything we want because "we're the boss". Being your own boss means you have to look out for yourself. You set work rules and a working schedule. You also have to make sure that your work space at home is professional, comfortable, well-lit and "safe". Surely, your boss is not going to make you work in a damp and dark basement on a dirty desk and risk you getting sick from these working conditions. And like a good boss you should also reward yourself for your accomplishments.

who knows?... Like most around here I go in spurts. I do like to hang out around here though. I like internet marketing. It's the only job I have ever had. Although it is truly hard to call what I do now a job, it was certainly an almost overwhelming job at one point many years ago.

I think this is a great way to work from home because most people who work in corporate sectors get tensed up because of their boss and lose the interest to work. But if people can be their own boss, then there is no chance to lose interest and the final outcome would be enormous in a way such that noone would have thought if that person is capable of those things.

I think that another point, although really covered but unsaid, is that you have to know when something is not working, what it is and how you should change it. It's really easy in life to work hard, it's much harder to work clever.

    I'm currently trying the transition.
