Amazon Kindle Pulsing Question

I went to a blogging seminar in our local public library. Nothing in the seminar was new. They were just basically recreational bloggers.

But what I found intriguing was a guy in the audience, during the question and answer, who talked about a thing called "pulsing" with regards to promoting a Kindle book. Can someone explain how this "pulsing" thing works?

Pulsing refers to the price of the book. You can either pulse the price or pulse the free days you have if you signed up for Select. Pricing the free days works like this:

Scheldule multiple free campaigns, each lasting one or two days. Spread them apart by one or two days. For instance, day 1 is free, day 2 is paid, day 3 free, day 4 paid...and so on.

Pulsing the price means you go into your account every few days and alternate between a high price and a low price.

As to whether it works or not, I haven't tested it. However, the idea is that more people download the book during the free or cheap days, which helps you climb the bestseller lists. Once it goes to a higher price, the downloads may slow down and the rankings start to drop. Then the price will drop again and it will get more downloads and higher rankings again (theoretically).

If you use all 5 of your free days at once, you should see a lot of downloads for those 5 days and possibly a steep drop after those days are up. Pulsing allows you to keep higher rankings longer by spreading this drop out a bit.

      Hey, thanks for the clarification!

I have actually done this but the results on sales OF THE SAME BOOK THAT HAD BEEN PULSED has not been good. However, books related to pulsed book have seen increases in sales. Kind of like a loss leader thing.
