is it okay to giveaway free seo service for a new business

so we decide to give away Free Seo Service to some selected websites.
my question is : is it ok to giveaway such free services when you are new in business, or we are just making it worse for us.
i seriously need reviews on this decision.

Edit: Another problem
we have announced the date for contest but just a few quality sites have registered
all other are just crap,warez,etc.
what should we do
i suggest we should postpone the contest date.
what do you say

It's a tough question - obviously everyone's situation is unique. ANd you are entitled to your own business model.

However - once it's done, it's done - you can't take it back.

Personally, I would try to get an agreement to pay if and when results are achieved - that way, there is no pressure on the client, but you will definitely get something out of it.

Alternatively, you could do it for a testimonial - depends on how much that testimonial is worth to you.

I see a lot of freeloaders. I would stay away from doing anything free. Maybe offer something cheap as an example of your work.

I agree that you should get something in exchange, whatever it is. For example, once I help a radio, HotMix106 | HotMix106 Radio and got an ad on the site + some air time. Trading is what you do in business. They could promise referrals, but that doesn't generally work. I've tried that before.

For sure, as mentioned, you won't be able to go back on your word. However, asking for testimonials is a good idea. Especially if you can have it on THEIR website and in a YouTube video.

    Good luck!

No, it is not at all a wise decision. You should not give your professional SEO service absolutely no cost for your potential clients, rather you can do sample free work for them showing your skill and ability in the given field. If they are real buyers, they will come to you sooner then later.

    I think that makes sense

    Thanks.

I agree with virtualconsultant. You should give them sample free work and if they are interested, they will look for you .

i agree id stay away from doing things for free. you could offer free seo to get started but seo can take up to 9 months to have the ball rolling so you could off free to start with the first month to start getting feet off the ground then continue to support the clients at a cost? good luck

If you're going to do something for free just give them a sample. Maybe something that will help them a little bit just to show them what is in store if they DO in fact decide to go with your service.

I'd rather ask them for a small price first if it's a new business that wants a site optimized for search engines. grumpyjacksa actually gave a good suggestion. You can give them the service for a very small price, but tell them that they have to add something if the results will show.

I'd try to stay away from free, as some Warriors above said, it can take months to see real results. If anything, at least barter with them for some of their services. This can be a good way to get off the ground and build a portfolio.

Since you are new, why not giving a special price plus bonus ?

Instead of giving it away for free, maybe you could just bundle your free seo service with another product to increase its product value.

I would definitely try to stay away from giving away your services for free. You could instead give discounted copies for the first 10. if not that then try to get something else in return if the project is successful, credit to the store (if its an ecommerce).

Bottom line, try not to work for free.

I think you will end up with frustration if you provide free seo service. Without money you will not be able to give your 100% and your clients who will receive free seo from you will also not be satisfied. But you can offer basic on page seo for free and charge for off page or something similar to this.

If you need a testimonial and portfolio, go for it, but have an end-date or better yet a "results achieved clause" which triggers the end and they start paying. Don't leave it wide-open.

Alternatively, arrange a deal where you get paid for leads/sales. That's a win/win option and you get a client for a testimonial/portfolio. You never know, getting paid for results could be more lucrative than flat rate or package pricing.

I would'nt give away free SEO services. I would have an end date to the free service if I was to offer it at all.

    • Hi. I suggest setting up an affiliate system for your paid "trial" SEO service package. Offer a 90% or more commission per sale percentage to affiliates. This will allow you to entice others in promoting your SEO services for you. If you integrate your SEO service package order and payment form into your mailing list subscription process, then you have others promoting your business, SEO services and products, site, content and paid "trial" SEO service package, so they help you drive buyer traffic to your site and sales pages as well as help you populate your mailing list subscriber base with buyer traffic...

To promote your business, SEO sservices and products, site, content, affiliate offer and paid "trial" SEO service package, then you can use free Adwords, Yahoo! and Facebook PPC credits. You can also negotiate content syndication and banner/text link ad placement arrangements on other sites, blogs and mailing list emails of webmasters operating contextually relevant, heavily trafficked sites, blogs and Web forums or online community networks with large active readership, membership and mailing list subscriber bases. You can offer them money, or your content which their viewers will find helpful, or other services you offer. Hope this helps...
