Twitter. Why Should A Marketer Target It?

Because of the following:

1) It allows you to instantly connect to a huge market and promote your product, brand, etc..
2) It's the fastest and simplest way to stay close to your prospects and customers.
3) There is no "noise" created by boring people on it since "friendships" are not mutual.
4) Twitter made huge success from the mobile device users.
5) In February 2009, Twitter had a monthly growth (of users) of over 1300 percent - several times more than Facebook.
6) Twitter is a broadcasting Social Network that allows you to reach to a vast market with a single tweet.

Marketing is about numbers, and these support Twitter.

      Hi Jonathan,

You're right, Twiter is exactly the 9th website on Internet (8th in the US) when it comes to traffic ranking at this moment according to Alexa with an increase of 0.82% last month, followed by 0.26% from Yahoo while gmail had 0.07% and face book 0.05%.

      Thank you

But it isn't just about the numbers, it's also about the quality of those numbers. And a lot of the time the quality of a Twitter follower is less than ideal. This is just my opinion but it seems Twitter would be more suited to large companies as a way to increase their brand awareness than as a marketing tool for small businesses or internet marketers looking to get more customers.

      Hi Kenwerd,

It's a fact that marketing is about quantity, but also and most importantly about quality. All major brands use Twitter as well as FaceBook for creating awareness, nevertherless there's a gap for the tiny marketers like us which is being used wisely with proven outcome. Twitter is like a massive cake divided and shared largely by the giants (the well-known brands), however we can still have our bit (it's enormous, they won't eat it all) from it and enjoy it should be our aim. Remember: "It's free".

Online businesses potentially have the world at their feet with what online marketing has to offer. From free online directories, blogs, link exchanges and what appear to be most popular, social sites. Your customer base can be anyone from people at work browsing through your site on their lunch hour, browsing on their days off sat on their sofa or sitting on public transport doing their daily commute. Your website is accessbile through google ranks etc but having your business on twitter and facebook if much more direct and free! Fans and potential customer can receive your tweets and facebook statuses directly to their computer and also their mobile phones.

Times are changing and social media is already the next big thing. Whether its facebook or twitter your using, does it help you?

I believe that gaining followers is great and gives you a sense of achievement and makes you feel that you have a mini fan base. Returning the favour and following people back is also a bonus. I also believe that you should communicate back to your followers and show a personality as at the end of the day, you want your business to succeed and to interact will increase popularity but also its just being polite.

Many companies on twitter for example have thousands of followers but dont follow anyone back unless their a celebrity and never send genuine tweets. I guess if your a super fan of their products you are only interested in when the next 'sale' tweet will be sent, but dont you want to interact with the company and for them to have a personality? Show you that there is a human who sends the tweets and they genuinely want to tell you what's great about the brand rather then robotic tweets and that they are interested in their customer fan base?

I manage twitter accounts and interact alot with our followers also seen as potential customers. Whether its a sales tweet or new product launch, i believe that showing a personality from your account is more appealing and makes social media tools more fun, am i right or wrong?

OP = does this really work for you and produce any sales?

Twitter is just full of spammy adverts and people become blind to them.

I predict Twitter will die because of this, or if they survive they will have to find a way to eliminate spammy advertising.

      Hi Alan,

Twitter does work although it's obvious that there are some spammy messages in the site.

Let me tell you something, Twitter is a long term project and is not going to die in the next years at least because it keeps growing exponentially and is the prefered Social Network for celebrities and their followers/fans (Lady Gaga alone has more than 20 million followers). Also every giant brand uses Twitter for marketing purposes as well as the smart online marketers.

You can boost your business with Twitter, but you have to figure out how to do it or seek advice from experts in Twitter Marketing.

I agree, I just cannot see how Twitter is an effective marketing tool.

I concentrate on my lists, rather than twitter, for the exact reason what alan has said above.

      Hi Romeo,

Twitter is definitely an effective marketing tool which you should never underestimate.

I'm not against using a list because is one of the best marketing tools (perhaps the best one) for online marketing, however by using Twitter effectively you can enormously increase your list turning your followers into your list subscribers and eventually into buyers or referrals.

      Hi Thereikid,

Using FaceBook is great and advisable for any modern marketing plan, however Twitter as you said is for mass audience and you need (like everyone who is an online marketer) to get your message or brand yourself in front of a large crowd in order to stay in business or to expand.

If you only market in your neighbourhood soon you won't have any potential customer to target.

I have about 2700 followers on twitter but to be honest I really don't know what to do with them. Wish I could somehow turn them into email addresses. That would be cool.

I have a huge following on most of my Twitter accounts, but rarely make profit from them. It's great for brand awareness, but the visitors from Twitter barely hold any value.

      Hi Martyn,

2700 followers on Twitter is a good quantity, however only you can tell about the quality.

Twitter is good for disseminating information and creating and improving brand awareness. But rarely does it produce actual sales. The all-too-eager followers in Twitter are Internet Marketers themselves and/or spammers. Of course, having a Twitter account is advantageous specially that Social Media is steadily rising in popularity. But just don't rely on it too much for actual results.

      Hi BuriedAlive,

Twitter produces sales, but you have to figure out how to do it or seek advice from Twitter Marketing experts. Twitter is a genuine medium and it should be treatened differently but with the determination to obtain similar result as with the other media, it's like travelling in which you have different transport choices, you go for one of them and you have to arrive to your destination no matter which one you chose.

Even if Twitter was just for creating and improving brand awareness (which is not the case), I whould recommend every marketer to use it.

Today you can't just be marketing in only one site (although you can focus on some of them), even if it's proven to be working, you should have an ambitious marketing plan.

      Hi Stephen,

Twitter like any other medium or business has its weaknesses and perhaps this is one of them.

Twitter is a very nice tool as long as you keep it tidy . Yes it has spammers but every "social" site does. Google+ and its circles also is a very good alternative way to promote and keep connected with your customers.

Twitter is great and especially if you build your followers the right way. Many people are doing the fiverr job with the 10,000 followers rubbish etc. Personally if you want results, targeted followers is the only way.

Isn't twitter the same as building a list on autoresponder? You still promote your product/service thru tweet. The same thing as sending email to your list.

The people who say Twitter "doesnt work" for marketing either have NO idea what they are doing, or they have never bothered to try it for themselves.

Think about this - Each time you send a tweet to someone with your link, not only are you driving traffic, but you're also creating a backlink. And as we all know, quality backlinks = higher search ranking.

You can use Twitter to build an email list. You can use it for CPA. You can use it for affiliate marketing. I mean the possibilities are endless.. Whatever you wanna use it for, you can do. All it takes is some creativity.

I had a client who was paying me 400 bux per month to build his account with followers, tweets, and interact with his followers. He had me sending them direct messages immediately after they followed him, saying "Hey, I see we both follow X person, I did an interview with him. If you give me your email I can send it to you"

He said he was getting a 60-70% opt-in rating. Then he just added their email to his list. Now that is creative thinking. lol

So yea.. just try it out for yourself & make your own decision.

Only way Twitter would work is if you are blogging and already have an audience. Otherwise you're just adding more spam to the spam.

Twitter marketing tip : Always make your Twitter photo a
picture of you. When you use your logo people feel like they are talking to a corporate 1-800 number. When you use your picture
they feel like they are talking to a person. Another tip is to think carefully about your Twitter bio, it’s short but not much to go on when choosing to follow you or move along to someone else.
