Google slapped itself...

No joke, Google slapped it's own site for breaking the rules.

Turns out Google Japan was paying bloggers to write favorable reviews and when the word
got out, Google was embarrassed.

Google.co.jp got a page rank slap from a PR 9 down to a PR 5. Ouch.

Goes to show you that Google isn't afraid to slap blackhat tactics, even if they do it
themselves.

That's a good marketing move. (After all we're talking about it.) You've got to admit they've got some creative people working there at Google.

Google has pulled a few blunders lately, like when they labeled the whole Internet as malware including themselves. Good to see even the mighty take a few hits, makes me feel better since I have taken a few as well.

Wow, that's ridiculous that they even did that. Don't they have any control over that branch? You'd think that if it was Google it would follow it's own rules.

I was thinking the same as you and Eric Lorence here:

Sometimes businesses have to show people they mean business where no one is the exception to the rules. Even if it means penalizing yourself to show it.

You can bank on it being fixed soon ....

Actually, they're really hurting in Japan. Yahoo Japan is kicking Google's butt. So they were willing to try anything to boost their image! Goes to show you that Google CAN do wrong.

Getting the "slap" sucks big time, I've experienced it myself (as I'm sure we all have or will at one point or another). Once I learned the "right" way to go about SEO, my sites took off on their own without resorting to grey or black hat.
