What is the average product selling conversion rate for a blog?

(At least I think that is the right words to use for the question,)

If I sell a product on my site what percentage of the people who go on it will buy the product?

I understand that's it's different for everyone but I've never sold anything online before and would love to know what to expect. A general average to work off would be great!

Thanks for any help,

Trying to achieve direct sales from visitors to your blog will produce much lower results than building a list of responsive visitors, educating them on your chosen niche so that they come to recognize you as an expert, then 'soft selling' to your list.

Persuade them to sign up yo your list by offering them something of value in return for their email address.

I'm not going sell anything yet and when I do it'll be relevant and on a site people will search for the product on. Is there such thing as an average percentage of traffic to expect sales from?

It's one of those "How long is a piece of string" questions unfortunately.

It really is just impossible to answer. It depends on how you sell, the type of traffic you are getting, the demographics of the visits, what you are selling, the price... I could go on.

I don't mean to be one of those "I know everything" sorts (because I'm not) but all I would say is the best way you can find out is to take action yourself.

Get that website set up. Get that product up for sale. Get traffic to it. And then see the results.

One of the main elements of Internet Marketing is testing. If it converts well initially then (lucky you) and repeat with other products. If it doesn't succeed then whatever you do DO NOT GIVE UP... Tweak it, get it earning.

In my opinion, ANYTHING can be sold... The best salesmen in the world could sell an old shoe lace for $1000. It's how you market to those visitors.

    Good luck!

That's shame,) I was hoping for 1% or 2% something like that. I've been selling in shops for the past year and have been told to go online. I suppose I have the time to experiment, I guess I have no choice.

If it were that easy. And you'll unlikely see a consistent conversion rate either... Some days you'll get 10% and other's you might get 0.1%

It depends on the particular visitors, time of the year, where they came from (to get to your site)...

For example, if you sell gift type items, obviously your conversion rate would increase around Christmas.

I see so it's a matter of getting as many visitors as possible and watching the traffic to see for myself how it goes up and down at certain points of time. I did expect it to take a year or so to get started online.

Not necessarily getting as many visitors as possible.

1 targeted visitor is better than 1000 untargeted visitors.

There's a lot to learn. It also depends on how you plan to get the traffic:

    a) Naturally through Search Engine results
    b) Social Networks (Facebook Pages, Twitter)
    c) Paid Advertising
    d) Email Advertising
    e) Other

You will want targeted traffic, make sure you're aiming to rank for "buying" keywords. Once you have the traffic, play around with your design and do tests for the best CTR.
