Outrageous!! GoDaddy is going to fine me!

I have bought domains and hosting from GoDaddy for years now. I'm more than just a loyal customer...I'm someone who spends a good deal of money every year with this company.

I decided to turn off the automatic renewal for a domain that I don't care about, and let it expire.

Today I got an email that explained that the domain name had expired on March 10th (as I had wanted), but they are threatening me in the email saying that if I don't renew this domain before March 21st, they are going to fine me $80 F%&$ing dollars.

Are you sure it's a fine? $80 is what they will charge if you decided to renew the domain 18 days after the grace period. It's called redemption fee. If you renew within 18 days you will be on regular price (around $10).

Now if you let it expire you will pay nothing. If they indeed charge you $80 for letting it expire then that's another story.

Maybe that's what it is, but regardless it's extremely threatening. They harass the crap out of you to get you to renew anything, so this is just pushy and ugly. I've got them on the phone and I'm going to rip some serious @$#.

        Wow.

It's an 80 dollar renewal fee if you get it beyond a certain date after expiring. It's been like this for years.

If you know it's expiring, and you know it's 80 dollars to renew after expiring, then why don't you renew before the price increases?

Or, if you don't want the domain, don't renew it.

That isn't that hard to understand, right? Or maybe I'm missing something...

Godaddy can charge whatever they want for domains.

As far as the "pushy" emails...well. That's also simple - delete it and move on.

No one is forcing you renew the domain and no, it's NOT a fine. They cannot do that.

Whoa! Hopefully you just mis-read that. I still have the majority of my domains with Godaddy; but after the whole SOPA fiasco, I'm in the process of moving everything to NameCheap.

I know Godaddy is just trying to do business, but I don't really appreciate all the phone calls and sales tactics to try to get me to renew.

That's not a fine, it's an extra fee if you want to renew it past a certain date.

As Rob mentioned, it's been that way for a long time.

            You have a choice.

Really? Were those their exact words? I've heard before of people being charged extortionate amounts to renew domains, after they had allowed them to expire, but you have a perfect right to let domains die if that's your choice.

Well, just another reason to run in the opposite direction whenever GoDaddy is mentioned.

Yeah, I think you have mis-understood.

As of now they are giving you the chance to renew it for the regular price, but if you don't then you will have to pay the $80 to renwe after a certain date.

If you don't renew it at all it will just die out, you wont be charged.

Is the point of your comment we should reinforce this misunderstanding by the OP of the late charges they'll have to pay if it gets to that?

And if so, what the point of continuing the confusion? Drama?

People did read and understand what the OP said...

Then they corrected him, because the OP misunderstood a common notification.

We are bad Warriors, Bill. We should not correct misunderstandings, and instead, we should jump on the table, raise our fists to the sky, and scream at God about such injustices... :p

This is not a fine and not something that GoDaddy does exclusively. The OP is completely mistaken. Basically, the issue is that they are trying to retain you as a customer. As such, what they do is to make you an offer: they'll keep your domain on hold for a few weeks beyond the expiration date and if you decide to change your mind, you'll be charged an extra fee for them having done so. If you decide to let it go, then you pay nothing.

Regarding the charge of "harassment," I don't think GoDaddy is all that different from many IM companies in that they bombard you with e-mails to try to make money from you. Everyone knows that they try to offer numerous upsells when you register and this is just part of it. However, it's nothing insidious. Just part of what's done on a regular basis in the IM world.

Personally, I had a really horrible experience with Namecheap where they acted extremely unprofessionally and I nearly lost my domain name because of them. At least with GoDaddy, they send you notices about everything so you know what's going on.

And no, I have nothing to gain from this. I am just a satisfied GoDaddy customer.

You're complaining about the fact that they CHOOSE to give you a grace period of nearly 2 weeks?

They make their terms on this quite clear. Your ignorance is not their fault.

There are many things in business that are much worse than this, and you know what they say about those who can't stand the heat.

Sorry, I'm a caring person, but you do not have my sympathy, nor my empathy, in this matter.

    All the best,
