Videos and Other Bandwidth Sucking Sites

Howdy

Due to an unfortunate accident I had some time ago my Doctors have told me to forget about working again. Now it is time for me to put a full-time effort into this business. I have been doing this on a PT basis for several years, but with my new outlook on things I have begun to try and catch-up on the newest trends and tactics, which brings me to my headline.

We live out in the middle of no-where, literally! Our only 2 choices for internet are dial-up, and satellite, and of course we use the Hughes Satellite Service for our internet. The thing is they have a fair access policy which limits downloads to 250 meg to 450 meg depending upon your plan, and they are not cheap.

Trying to follow the IM crowds emails, there seems to be a lot of automatically starting videos, which on top of that have no stop button. This leaves me with no choice but to close the whole page, just to shut off the video. If I find myself doing this a lot, I imagine there are other folks doing the same thing. I have seen several products that I had a real interest in purchasing, but couldn't afford to stay on the website long enough to make the purchase.

Please at least put the STOP button back. If I read your salespage/website and then decide I want to watch the video, I have options with Hughes to be able to do that, but it won't happen if I have to close the browser before I can read it.

I know those of us with dial-up and satellite connections are living in the dark ages, but some of use don't have a choice, and we can be good customers too.

I have run across some that I couldn't get the left click to stop it. Of course I can't find any of them now.

I should have been a little clearer in my original post. Yes most can be stopped, but some seem to keep downloading the file while it is stopped or paused. I have lost my download meter that I was using, but it was clearly showing a continuous drain on bandwidth when the video was stopped. Being able to stop a video and let the Buffer build up is nice when your connection speed is so slow, but if you don't want the video at that time it is just wasting bandwidth on both ends.

Anything that uses bandwidth is a problem when working with such small download thresholds.

      Dear Fellow Hughesnet Sufferer

Hughesnet sure is better than dial-up, and WildBlue Satellite. At least Hughesnet has the free download period. Some nights I end up downloading a gig or more, but I don't sit up all night reading email and sales pages,

I tried searching for a way to stop them, but I guess my search terms were not close enough to get results. That maybe just what I need. I will give those methods a try and let everyone know how they worked.

If you use firefox or chrome there are plugins (flashblock for firefox) that will stop flash and only load it on request.

There is only also internet compression service providers, that will compress the data your requested to lower the bandwidth being use. I also know that as part of it's browser package Opera offers a similar sort of service built into their system.
