whats cheapest way to get phone# in another state?

I'm not going to go into why I need a phone number in a US state that I don't live in but I do.

I looked into 800 or 888 toll free numbers but that isn't gonna work for what I need.

I looked into Vonnage and that works but it's a min $18 month.

vonnage will let me live in state A and have a phone # in state B

is there an alternative that anybody here knows about?

thanks

I've got a Manhattan number and it only costs me about $25/3 months - and I'm not just in another state.

Did it through Skype. Real easy.

frankly, I think this should be disabled. everyday, I got lots of calls for selling insurance, auto-warranty, etc... 800, 888, local, long distance, .... they always change the #, anyone knows how to remove the # from their list? Or, where I can complain this to?

they always start with: This is the second notice .......

there should have a law to stop this, or, does it have this law already? anyone knows?

Sign up for the Do No Call list https://www.donotcall.gov/

It doesn't prevent companies that you have a relationship with from calling you though, nor charities

how about 20 dollars a year? The catch is you have to leave your computer on for your phone to work?

    Check it out magicjack.com

I have tried it out and it is pretty clear. It's not for me because you have to leave the magicjack program running in order for your phone to work.

If you can live with a program running all the time on your computer and you have high speed internet service... get a magicjack you can use any kind of phone you want cordless, corded what ever.

You can take the phone to any country. The catch is you will have to have a billing address in the US or Canada.

    good day,
    Michael

You can also use Googles Grand Central. You will need to pick what area code you want to use and then enter your contact info when they have an opening. Maybe someone here has an invitation - I'm out!

I use it and it's great!

If anyone here does decide to go with magicJack, do yourself a favor and buy it at a local Radio Shack or other authorized dealer (just in case it doesn't work on your PC or you simply don't like it and want to return it for a refund). I've read horror stories about people trying to get refunds having an extremely difficult time. But to be fair to magicJack, most of these complainers did NOT read the ToS and did NOT return the device using the proper methods spelled out in the ToS.

Don't expect any kind of real support if you run into problems. They do have a tech chat support, but it's obvious that they are only allowed to respond with canned messages. Which in many cases have absolutely nothing to do with your question.

I've personally not had a hard time with their support, but I've read the stories of others who have. There are tons of cut and paste transcripts where you can tell that the support person didn't even read the question and simply went through the motions of copy/paste canned messages. LOL

But why people expect stellar support for $40/yr is beyond me. Especially when you are lucky to get any decent support even with traditional Ma-Belle's. It's almost always the run around with phone support people. So I'm not expecting much out of magicJack as far as support goes.

Good luck in whatever method you decide.

Personally, for reliability purposes I would go with something like skype over magicJack if you need a dedicated number w/o fail. MagicJack does have its quirks/bugs and their support is unlikely to fix your problems for you (unless it's something really simple like a firewall setting or something along those lines).

Good luck no matter what you decide.

    David,

I got my first out-of-state number through Yahoo voice, though I wouldn't recommended. A lot of VoIP companies offer this service if I'm not mistaken.

My housemates got Magic Jack about a month ago and have no complaints so far. Only complaint is that the interface window is always open in the background somewhere on the PC (my PC, for some reason). But it's got caller ID and contacts list, virtual 911 and all of that.

    wilmonstam,

    Thanks for the link!
