I have a WP Blog type site that I set up and have ignored for about 2 months. So far this month it has about 1000 hits from 20 ip's with 15000 page views. Google check shows them as comment spammers. I disallowed comments for about 2 weeks and listed the ip's as banned. Still getting hits and page views. Is it possible to stop this? I want to start posting content and trying to rank this site, but not with this nonsense going on. What to do? Thank you warriors for help over the last year or so.

Where are you banning the IP from? Ban it from cPanel, or provide your host with the IP.

@keywordguy - I don't even have ads on yet. But as I go forward I planned on using adsense. Can't have all these bogus views.

Why do you want the IP to stop? Because you don't like that the ads are firing?

@Kingfish85 - was listing ips in WP comments section of the theme. It has a banned ip section. However, it appears this doesn't work well. I will definitely look at c-panel. thank you.

That's your best bet. Block it from cPanel, or even in WHM if you're running a firewall like csf.

Banning the IP won't help. They are probably using proxies and will just keep rotating them. I'm assuming you have Akismet already running.

I would do one of two things.

1)Add a plugin that requires a captcha to be entered to leave a comment.

2)Or add a plugin that only allows comments through your Facebook account. In other words, the visitor has to be logged into Facebook and leave the comment with their own profile.

One of those two things will probably stop these kind of spamholes.

By the way, if you notice them targeting any local keywords like "dentists in XYZ", I would send off an email to that business and let them know about the spam that their SEO is dumping out there pointing back at their site. Explain the risks to the reputation of their business. That will probably get them fired, which they deserve.

These are good points. If you're consistently seeing the same IP addresses, then banning them will work as well.

I do that and I also follow the links to see if the site has a facebook fan page. If they do, I just comment on their Fan page to stop spamming me or I will report it to their hosting company.

Thanks guys. Just used cpanel to ban a range. This will cover 3/4's of the addresses. gonna wait a day and check if this does it. No comments are actually being left - commenting turn off in the theme - just about 15000 page views from 2000 hits about 8 seconds apart, over and over.

That is also a very good idea Rus. Forgot about that one. Making it public, will usually get a response much faster.

My mistake. Based on the title of the thread, I assumed that was what was happening, but reading your post again cleared it up.

Depending on what type of proxies or VPN they might be using, you might be able to trace them. If they are using a more legitimate provider and you give them the IP information and time it was used, they will sometimes provide you with the information to trace them further so you can report them to their ISP.

the spamming comments are always disturbing any website owner. Me also I got 3000 spamming comments in just 2 days!!

I resolve this with putting logical captcha like "what is the result of 18-4" or "what is the capital of United States?"

I am not using the image captcha because there are some spamming softwares that are able to solve the image captcha and spamming you.

    I hope this help you

Yes captcha or similar will stop the spam comments but it will not stop the bot traffic hitting your site.

As suggested you need to block by IP or URL before it hits your site so plugins and themes will not help there.

I had a horrendous amount of bot traffic hitting one of my severs that was a VPS and still manged to crash it when the "attacks" got really heavy. I identified (from the stats) a range of IPs an half a dozen URLs that were causing most of it (mainly .RU if memory servers correctly). My hosting added a firewall and blocked those and all is now well
