Multiple websites on same niche - best practice?

Hey ya'll,

I'm new to the whole IM world and just settling down and focusing on a single strategy - I went through that nasty "shining object" phase of buying products and being all over the place, I guess it's a common "sickness" with new IMers

This is my dilemma: I'm setting a review authority site around a niche and would like to know what's the best model for building multiple of those sites? Let me elaborate: let's say my niche is mouse trap reviews. I'm planning on targeting number of high traffic, low/medium competition keywords with decent commercial value, such as: "mouse trap reviews", "best mouse traps", "mouse trap deals", etc, you get the idea. I have also bought number of exact matching domains, let's say: mousetrapreviews.com, bestmousetraps.com, etc. I'm thinking of writing reviews for the main site, then spin those and use for other sites, and hopefully one of them (or number of them) will get ranked.

I did the due diligence and searched the forum to find my answer to no avail, hence this new thread (my first one - yey). So if anyone could advice with the best practice with multiple websites around the same niche I'd highly appreciate. Cheers,

max

Been there - done that - it's time to focus, right?

You don't need to have an exact match domain to rank. As in, you don't need mousetrapdeals.com to rank for mouse trap deals. You want one site. Make it an authority site, and focus on say, 5 keywords. The more sites you have, the thinner you're going to split your time and in the long run, in my opinion, it's best to focus on one. That way you can spend more time on the site to optimize it, focus all your SEO efforts on it, begin to get regular, high-quality articles on there, and so on.

i would suggest to work with only one domain.then make some web 2.0 properties and put your spinned articles there. and link them back to your main domain. you will get the links.

I would prefer to make one site and make the content amazingly good and focus on that, rather than focusing on the volume of sites. If you are trying to rank for the same keywords then it makes little sense. Ranking isn't random, its about quality, SEO and backlinking.

I would only do two sites if the niche was a) huge or b) i could have subniche sites. Having multiple sites competing for the same keyword isn't adviseable, particularly when you want to post spun content on the secondary sites.

In my opinion, one domain is best. Less expensive and easier to drive traffic to just one site. You can develop it into a sweet authority site.

That said, if you find that you are focusing on one area over and over within the site and that is not the goal, you could then spin off that niche topic and make another site.

I have one large authority site for example with a ton going on. But one of the topics in the site just needed more focus than I wanted on that site, so I spun it off making it's own site. The spin off does amazingly well as people can just see that aspect of the topic and that's all they are looking for.

I would definitely start with just the one site though and be sure to make the domain name general enough to cover what you want.

You don't NEED a bunch of sites to make some good money. HOWEVER, It is advisable to have a few sites to work with.

One really big reason for this is simple:

If Google deems that ONE site of yours to not fall into its range of quality and they banish it to never never land, then you just lost your entire income stream.

If you have multiple sites that has your income spread through out all of them, then 1 getting hit isn't so bad, because you will have the other ones to get paid from in the end.

I have several sites that are centered around a certain topic, but each site focused on a specific niche within that topic. For ME, this works great. Plus if I am bored with a single site, I can just ignore it for a bit and work on another one.

The post above is spot on. I own just a handful of larger sites in the electronics niche. There are always one or two that are earning most of my money at any given time. In some cases, I own upwards of half of the first page of google for certain terms.

Wow 100% consensus, can't argue with that: focus and grow one authority site, unless they are going to be in different sub-niches, such as old style mouse-traps, high-tech computerized mouse-traps, etc. Thanks for the feedback everyone, I really appreciate it!
