Unsubscribers, how many do you have?

I've had a philosophy my whole IM career - this was that unsubscribers didn't matter. That they wern't important. But today after doing a little analysis it turns out that on my lists, one in every 52 people that join my list, unsubscribe.

I didn't really know of this was good or bad. My whol purpose of starting this thread was just to get a comparison to other marketer. So what are all you other warriors unsubscriber rates like?

Ofcourse we have to take in to account that some peoples list may be bigger or smaller than mine, but I just wanted a rough idea.

That does not seem like an overly high unsubscribe rate at all. But bear in mind that different niches will have incredibly different norms.

For example, the unsubscribe rate in the "internet marketing" niche is A LOT higher than the bass fishing niche.

Anyways, the most important statistic is the amount of money you generate PER OPT IN. To me, a subscriber that NEVER buys anything and someone who unsubscribes are worth about the same thing. <--- I'd actually rather have an unsubscribe because it will decrease the cost of list maintenance.

Test how much you make per lead. That's the better way to optimize your sales funnel.

Depends on a number of things.

      1) How you built your list. (Was it a freebie give away then you started to promote paid offers to them? Or did they buy something to get on your list?)

      2) The niche it is in like co2 pointed out above.

      3) If they were just looking for free information all the time and get tired of being pitched offers.

      4) They opted in for a specific purpose... free offer, or bought something. But they still don't want to hear about other things.

      5) Negativity with the list in the past... A product you sold or pitched that they felt sucked.

      6) Talking about things they do not want to hear about. Like political views etc...

      All kinds of other reasons...

But 1 in 52 isn't anything to worry about...

When your list is in the thousands (which yours might be). Every email you send out will probably get an unsub or two... Sometimes a few.

People that like you and want to to hear what you have to say, promote, bitch about, etc... will stay. Those who don't want to hear it will leave.

My goal as an e-mail marketer is to purposefully INCREASE
      my unsubscribe rate.

      Why?

I only want people on my list who want to hear from me
and like the way I do things.

Rather than focusing on lowering unsubscribe rates, get
a strong, POLARIZING voice that gets some people to
like yuo and others to dislike you.

This will create an even stronger bond between you and
the people on your list that really like what you have to
      say.

One of the worst things you can do as a list builder is to
try to please everyone (i.e. the formula for failure).

Don't pussy foot around treading on egg shells.

      As Dan Kennedy says...

"You can only attract to the degree that you're prepared
      to repel."

      Dedicated to mutual success,

      Shaun

Just as important as the unsubscribe rate is the unsubscribe profile. If it is smooth then it is (probably) just natural. But if it is spiky then it means that some of your emails are provoking more unsubscribes than others. You need to look at the reason why. It might be good (e.g. you are eliminating the people who will never buy) or it might be bad (e.g. you are offending your customers).

You are doing awesomely well with that rate (mere 2% unsubscribe rate). But I'm not bothered by unsubscribers so far as I'm sharing good content and promoting good products. You can never please everyone.

My unsubscribe rate is negligible; under 1%. Besides having very prominent unsubscribe links with every message, my lists are cleaned out regularly of inactive subscribers. Non-buyers are automatically expunged after any 120-day cycle of inactivity. It may seem extreme, but this method of screening effectively eliminates any problems associated with deadweights and free-loaders.

    hey ryan

    unsubscribes are good

theres nothing worse than trying to help someone and creatig quality products, reports and content if the person doesnt even care, read or appreciate the info im giving them

i only want people on my list that want to hear what i have to say

we have to realize that we are all different and it doesnt matter how good, funny, professional you are not everyone will like you

we are all different and all like different things

someone famous for instance like lady ga ga, millions of people love her but some absolutely despise her its just the way it is

so when it comes to unsubscribes its normal and 1 in 52 ryan isnt anything to be alarmed about

i rarely get an unsubscribe but they still happen sometimes

i would rther have a list of 700 people that all love to get my emails than 10,000 where they are not responsive and not really that interesed in what i have to say
