Refund for article writing?

Recently I ordered $150 worth of product review articles from a service on the Warrior forum.

The problem is, the quality is very bad. The grammar is poor and the reviews have been poorly structured with walls of text instead of proper paragraphs, making it look unsightly. Also the conclusions are just like a sales pitch instead of giving a balanced opinion on the product.

I complained I wasn't pleased with the quality and they apologised and told me they would revise the reviews, but when I recieved the revised reviews hardly anything had changed, they were still almost the same as before.

I payed via Paypal. Do you think I would be eligible for a refund if I filed a dispute? Their site says they make unlimited revisions, but it's clear that they are using non-english writers so I don't see how the revised versions will be up to scratch. I did ask for a refund, but I haven't had a reply yet.

Does anyone here have any experience in filing a dispute for article services?

Well, according to PayPal's rules you could be granted a refund for such a service. But they're going to ask you for a bunch of documentation on what went down and how you went about trying to remedy the situation.

My question to you is this, didn't you look at some samples of this service before engaging them?

I'd always place a small test order if you haven't used a service before so you know what sort of quality you'll be getting.

Perhaps try to resolve it with the person/company again and let them know that you will get in touch with Paypal to file a dispute if they don't respond adequately.

Along with the policy of unlimited revisions did they have
a refund policy? If they didn't then you are stuck with
the unlimited revisions until they get it right.

An unlimited revision policy is impractical for obvious reasons.

At the same time I don't know how many articles you got
as a part of the $150 package, but that number may
    indicate your fundamental problem.

Sadly, no. PayPal doesn't honor refunds for virtual materials. Only for physical goods. In any even though, this is what I've said all along -- you can't expect to get something for nothing. How many articles did you expect to get for your $150? If you expected anything more than say 4-6, then you got what you paid for. Good writers take the time to research a subject thoroughly and write something which actually has real value. The cheap writers who will write a 500 word article for $5 write junk, unless you happen to get luck enough to catch them when they're just starting out but know what they're doing (I started out doing super cheap articles and the guy was begging me to take more work once I finished his order, but my prices these reflect the fact that I know I'm worth much more and I also put more time and effort into my work these days than I used to back then).

      Um....are you sure?

I mean, IMers' PayPal accounts are getting closed left and right is largely due to the high number of refund requests for ebook/course purchase.

Did you sign any kind of contract with the article writing service that spells out what would happen in this situation? Do they have any kind of return policy? Have you asked them for a refund?

I agree that asking for more revisions probably won't help. If they couldn't fix the problem on the second revision, I doubt they will on the third or fourth either.

You can get decent quality for $5 an article but its rare. Sounds liek you got taken by a foreign 'content' producer, ask for a refund from the guy, if that doesnt work, just move on, paypal wont give you your money back for something that isnt physical.

The fact that they don't honor requests for refunds on virtual products doesn't mean they don't take note of such things. People who are really determined can find ways to get refunds. Especially if they paid with a credit card and so they can be held liable, thus they have an interest in protecting themselves if they see a significant number of refund requests. However, this is in the PayPal TOS:

What type of payments are eligible for re-imbursement under PayPal Buyer Protection?

PayPal Buyer Protection only applies to payments for certain tangible, physical goods that can be shipped. Payments for the following are not eligible for re-imbursement under PayPal Buyer Protection:
Any item that is prohibited under the PayPal Acceptable Use Policy
        Intangibles
        Services
        Custom made items
Travel Tickets (including without limitation, airline flight tickets)
Licenses and other access to digital content
Vehicles (including, without limitation, motor vehicles, caravans, aircraft and boats)
Real estate (including, without limitation, residential property)
        Businesses
        Industrial machinery used in manufacturing
Items which you collect in person, or arrange to be collected on your behalf
Items that violate eBay’s Prohibited or Restricted Items Policy
Items equivalent to cash (including, without limitation, gift cards)
Items purchased using Website Payments Pro or Virtual Terminal (if applicable)
        Personal transaction payments
Oh and I should make it clear that when I say PayPal doesn't honor refunds, this doesn't mean that you cannot get a refund for a digital product. You can. However the person who sold it to you needs to initiate the refund. However, if you open a dispute with PayPal for a digital product, they will not honor the dispute and will close it immediately.

Or you can file the dispute and hope that the vendor will make good.

As a writer, I could tell you that I would grant a refund if you were so displeased with my product.

You paid for a product- the reviews. If they have a lot of mistakes in them and after pointing them out they weren't fixed, you should get your money back.

That said- I have yet to have this issue with my clients so it's hard for me to imagine how this all happened.

In the future, I recommend placing much smaller orders to "test the waters" first.

I would demand a refund from pay pal and keep asking till we get one. Other wise this clown act will continue writing articles instead of working in a circus. Perhaps he can get a job under the big top as a pooper scooper. Yeah following the elephants around is good exercise.

It's unfortunate. As someone above has also said, as a writer I would refund and revise so that the client had a perfectly good article, along with their money back. I hate to disappoint anyone.

That said, content companies are full of writers who are low-paid, and not always English. They should be edited but there is only so much editing that can be done, and you'll never get the same rate that you would get if you paid slightly more for a decent writer who can converse with you and write something you love.

Services are not covered under buyer protection.

Did you make it clear what you were expecting to begin with? Other than the poor grammar, the rest is subjective. If you didn't give them specific instructions to follow, is that really their fault for not coming up with what you want?

Not saying you didn't, but I'd like to weigh in on the other side since everyone else seems to be automatically weighted against the writer.

How much money you paid per article is really not the point. If you gave clear and specific instructions and the writer said they could do it, then they should provide what they promised.

I'd be surprised if that is the case, though, as most customers just say "I want 10 reviews" and give the product and maybe a keyword. If that is the case with you, then you have no reason to complain other than for the poor grammar if good grammar was promised.

I made the same mistake once and I learned my lesson. When I started doing article writing last year, I went solely through vWorker.com to get clients. It only took a couple of weeks for my reputation to grow (10 perfect-10 jobs in 14 days really helped) and I soon outgrew my ability to write. I hired another company on vWorker after talking at length with the main writer via Yahoo IM. He was in India, but he conversed like a British-English speaker and I was satisfied. The first job was around $150, same as yours, and the articles that were delivered were complete garbage. I went through the revision policy and was sent more garbage back. I ended up having to eat the money I paid to them and had to totally re-write the articles myself to keep from getting my reputation damaged.

After that, I put an ad in the local Craig's List section for gigs and was happy to find a few college kids who'd work for peanuts and turn out really good work for instant payments. It cost me a lot of money to learn this lesson, and I never did get the payment back, but it's not a mistake I've ever repeated.

Fortunatly, the service provider gave me a refund. No questions asked.

The reason I ordered $150 worth was because the feedback from other Warriors was very good plus they said the prices maybe going up soon so it seemed like a great deal. Lesson learnt anyway. Don't rely on positive feedback.

Great news... you were fortunate to get your money back..

Positive feed back does have a place, but seeing some sample
work would have been even more of a benefit in helping
to decide to go with the service provider. And you could have
also tried a small test order to see if that worked out OK.
If it did, then bump up your order to what you originally
      desired.

I agree with the previous posters in that you will not be able to receive a refund from Paypal. You have already asked for a refund from the company, so wait for the reply and if it is not timely ask again explaining that the quality is too poor to use the reviews.

Lesson learned - when using a new writer always look to see if they provide samples, if not ask for them before ordering.

Always make sure you know about any guarantee or refund policy before ordering to avoid this situation in the future.

Unfortunately there are a lot of non-native English speaking individuals trying to make money writing content in the English language. The phrase "Buyer beware" is so true.

I'm really sorry this happened to you.

When you jump in the tub, you stick your foot or hand in to test the water no?

You need to be patient and wait for a reply, and if he doesn't reply in a timely fashion, send him another email, and tell him if he doesn't reply in 48 hours, you will file a dispute with Paypal. I'm sure he will work something out with you.

Next time sample a couple articles before you put in a bulk order

I hope it works out for you, because I know alot of these article writing services, come from some poor country with a sweat shop full of people writing for a few dollars a day.
