Facebook business, get out there and do it

I posted this to my Facebook wall but I figured it would be just as helpful to post it here:

So I just looked on Facebook for a couple of bars close to home to see if they were screening the local soccer match tonight. I was shocked to find they are not on Facebook.

So here's an idea, look for every single bar in your area that's not on Facebook, put on your best suit and walk in the door, show them their competitors on Facebook (an iPad would be perfect for this) and explain why they need to have a page of their own and how it's costing them valuable business not having a page. If a business sees a competitor doing something they are not they will want to get involved.

Charge $200+ to make the page. This would probably take you about 30 minutes. You could even charge an ongoing monthly fee to manage the pages.

Repeat with restaurants, pizza shops, etc.

This is sooooo easy to do, but how many people who read this who claim times are hard or they can't make money online will do it?

I'm really trying to cultivate a social media consulting business in my area...it's rich with commerce but not a lot of competition in the social media side of consulting. The problem I found really doesn't come down to the page creation but the ongoing content.

Convincing people they need to provide the content and explaining what kind of content they need to have is hard for business-minded people who don't "get" social media. I could certainly do it or outsource it for them but 9 times out of 10 they know their industry a thousands times better than I could possibly learn.

Pages are great but I think the real killer business is in the ongoing part like you mention, the trick is streamlining it to be really profitable while remaining effective. Social media takes dedication and consistency and most people don't see the immediate benefits in that kind of work.

      Spot on, John.

Offline marketing for online services is BIG business. Especially for those who are getting by pretty ok offline, a lot of them don't know the power of leveraging on the internet and social media.

In fact, not just creating FB sites but mobile sites as well. The presentation can be similarly done by showing them how awful their site looks on a mobile device and telling them how they're losing out.

Then again, with HTML5 and CSS, more sites are being created that can adjust to any device ... so in that sense, I'm not sure how long truly 'mobile version' of sites will last.

Do you really think putting on the best suit is smart?

I've always thought overdressing is an implied way of saying, HEY! Don't talk to me! I'm a salesman!

Maybe just some business casual instead.

      I don't know, I've never done it.

I suppose that would depend on the situation. I know if someone walks into my office to sell me something they tend to be wearing a suit, and I'm usually dressed in jeans and trainers.

However, my business is online, not offline and I know if I were knocking on doors I'd put a lot more effort into my appearance.

Good thinking. The main idea behind this example is that almost everyone nowadays are searching the internet to find answers to their questions even that might be a restaurant, bar, just a place to have a coffee or whatever. A small "investement" for a creation of a simple website or a page on social network -Google+, Facebook etc- can make the difference
