Please help me understand the difference between a domain name like productnamereview dot com compared to bestproductnamereview dot com.

Will both of them rank the same if all things such as SEO are constant? The reason I ask is that when I do an exact search in GKT for "product name review" I get 5000 global monthly searches. When I search GKT for "best product name review" I get zero.

For the products I want to sell, I'm finding that many of them already have domain names that end with "review", "review", "scam" or "scams" so I'm searching for other options but when I do a search like I described above and add a word like "best", it worries me that I may be heading in the wrong direction.

If anyone can help, I'd certainly appreciate it.

Best is a stop word, Google doesn't pay attention to it, here's a list of stop words:

If you can get the simpler one go for that. If you can't, get the Best... version. Just think of what people are most likely to type when searching. I, for one, always want to type the least amount possible.

I have found that having an "exact" keyword match on the domain name works the best. This works especially well if you are buying an aged domain. I have bought aged domains 5+ years old with the "exact" keyword domain and done very minimal onpage seo based around the same keyword as the domain.... and within 1 week the site was ranking in the top 3 pages. This exact keyword domain was getting over 10k searches a month with moderate competition.

In my opinion it is ALWAYS better to have the exact keyword match in the domain! It's not an end all solution, but it does help

EMD's are not worth nearly as much as they were just a few years ago. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

It is more of a click through issue. Would you rather click on productreview.com or mybestproductrevieweverrightnow.biz?

Totally agree. If I could get the first option, I'd do it in a heartbeat but since I can't I have to look at other options like adding one more word. Thanks

Goat - this is a great list. So what you're saying is not to worry about using the word, "best" and that Google will only see the "product name" in my domain name, right? Thanks again for the list!

I agree that cosmetically a short and concise domain name looks a lot better than a long name. That's why I'm looking at adding just one word and if it's a word that Google will ignore based on Goat's list, I'll head toward that direction. Thanks

Not quite, what it means is that if someone uses "best" when they search, Google will ignore it. Meaning that "bestblahblah.com" will never be an EMD for anything.

While EMDs are not quite as magic as they used to be they will rank with half as much effort. It's up to you, if you are planning on building a big site with lots of content and backlinks and SEO etc. then your keywords in your content will be more important than your domain.

If you are planning on just making a site that does just enough to rank and let it sit and collect money, then EMDs are by far the better option.

My strategy is content, backlinks and SEO so it sounds like it's time for me to go register a domain name. Thanks!

          Heya Goat;
I think it's better to verify such things; for example, I have an EMD for 'best (financial term)' (not to reveal the niche). For searchers that search 'best financial term' (no quotes), I'm on P3, end up with some decent traffic too
But, for searches of simply 'financial term' (which is about 3x the search volume), I'm somewhere else entirely (protip: it's not even CLOSE to top 25 pages lol).
And, my EMD even has a hyphen! lol
So, my point is, this "stop" word IS factored into the results for that particular search, and I've managed to rank well for it : And I still feel this is due to on-page SEO and EMD for that specific term that I targeted.
Now, there may be some stop words where the results are exactly same for searches with/without them; I think the individual that is researching these should at least verify.
Would I prefer an EMD without 'best' in it? Definitely! But, I got what I could hehe.
Not to mention, ranking an EMD for this particular term without 'best'.... quite an uphill battle. The 'best' option, as it turns out, was to use the EMD that has 'best' in it
          Hope this helps,

You can not rely on the pre-fix of suffix which google ignore today. As I understand, they may modify the list at any time.

No; in my opinion, they won't.

To get the SEO benefit of ranking well for "productnamereview" you need the domain-name you choose to start with those words. Additional words/letters, whether a "stop-word" or not, should be after the keyword, not before it.

I can't prove this, but it's my belief. I learned it from Gene Pimentel, whom I consider to know more about domain-names than anyone else here. My own experiences certainly seem to bear it out.

But I also agree with the comments above that the overall SEO value of EMD's is considerably reduced, compared with what it probably was a few years ago.

Let me explain this as simple as possible so anyone can understand right?

The fact that you get ZERO for the second domain option does mean that almost nobody is actually typing that exact search term however do not forget that Google keyword tool was not designed to look for domain names but to show what people are actually looking for on the internet. Google does know perfectly well that EXACT match domain names: 1. Do not guarantee them any valuable content, 2. Almost any domain name under almost any extension or name can offer valuable information on an exact "search term" or niche and rank very well if the information provided triggers Google spider's "rank this" algorithm.

My advice will be then: Just register any niche related domain name if close to your keyword great if not then do not worry too much as long as you stick to one niche in your website, lets say: Fashion, so from there all the way down when it is about fashion you can target almost any fashion related search term and expect some nice results if your site appears as relevant to Google algorithm and spiders. In big G eyes it is all about one single word: AUTHORITY think of webMD kind of sites they match no search terms, no keywords, etc lol in fact they match NOTHING but rank everywhere WHY?? Remember it is Authority that matters in Google eyes, and that is the only key explained a million times by Google technicians, in terms of building any long term ranking success.

    That's it.

All the best and feel free to PM me if you have any other questions. I just love to help.

Remember try to keep your domain names under 15 characters long and descriptive.

If I were to venture a guess, I'd bet you are ranking for "best blahblah" because of keywords in your content and not your domain, but it could be that Google stop words are a farce as well. I started a thread on this a while back, because I sometimes think they aren't really "stop" words, but slow down words if you will.

Nobody knows for sure but "them" but to be safe I try not to use them.
