Why cant you kill your comopetitors with BAD backlinks ?

by grumpyb 12 replies
This is not something I would consider but I live in the real world and beleive that some people would.

So if backlinks to BAD sites send your SERP down What is to stop someone setting up BAD Blackhat links for a competitor simply to ruin their SERP ??

I read a thread where someone said Google were clever enough to work this out but short of having cameras in your offices and keyloggers on your computer and a wire into your brain then I think it might be a bit far fetched to think that Google are all seeing all knowledgable to this degree

    Very good question.

After some testing I believe that "Bad" backlinks have absolutely no effect on the SERP, neither positive nor negative. Yet I could be wrong.

And just in case they do indeed hurt your position, it's a simple matter of Google looking at the IP to see where they are coming from, if the geographical location is slightly different they will simply disregard it.

I think it might only hurt you if you use "Bad" backlinks to your site from the same IP.

I don't think a link coming into your site can hurt you. I think the whole "bad neighborhood" thing refers to where your outgoing links are pointed. If your site links to a bunch of spammy garbage sites that could hurt your site's rankings.

Note: This is just my understanding of the situation and I have no testing or data to back up this view point. If someone with some expertise on the subject posts here I will be happy to hear their input.

Daniel, I think you are spot on with your findings. I also did some testing for this and found no negative or positive effects. I think Google simply doesnt give you any link juice from known BAD sites. Paid links are a different story and have seen negative effects from known paid links.

If there is was a harsh penalty for bad links then the SERPS would be a chaotic mess.

Grumpy, I supose, if you really wanted to hurt a competitor, you could send some paid links to their site. But it really wouldnt be worth your time because some people are still getting away with piad links so you will probably just help their rankings and make it harder for your own site to rank higher.

A clean fight with no dirty tactics wont backfire, will save you time, money, and effort.

Yes well to add to the discussion I added some backlinks from a backlink service to one of my sites which was page 1 number 9 on the main SERP and had been there for some months
I added 250 backlinks (slowly) from submitedge and the result is I am now on page 6 and have been for weeks
So I think that bad links DO affect SERP

You can not control who links to you. otherwise it would be a free for all with competitors trying to get each other delisted with various techniques..

That's what most people think - let's keep it that way.

Even Google points out that they know that any bozo can link to you whether you want them to or not. You really can't hurt someone with "bad" links.

That's not true..... That's just the common thinking. Like I said - I've seen this proved wrong, not from the perspective of seeing someones site stop doing well, but I've seen a hacker put together a campaign to take down a site using links - and it worked.

Most people don't know 'how' to do this, so everyone thinks you can't - that's fine and the way it should stay, but when you say something like it's fact when you're just repeating what everyone else is saying - that's just a belief - not a fact, there's a difference.

Giving people statements of fact which are nothing more than heresay doesn't help anyone.

True, but you're exaggerating how easy this is to do. You'll have everybody around here paranoid about getting a single link from a RSS feed scrapper or pharma/porn/gambling site. In fact, it is quite hard to pull off, especially against established sites with authority and age. It's easier to damage a competing site several other ways, such as reporting them to Google for selling links or using some nasty site hacking and redirect tricks (which might have been what you saw, not just straight links).

Where did I read that the US Government site ranked #1 for a derogatory term after a heap of sites linked back to it with the derogatory term as anchor text?
