I have taken hosting services from Hostgator. Can I instal WP without connecting to my domain name & practice working on WP. Once I have practical knowledge of WP then I connect with my hosting provider with my domain name.

Regards......cbnet

You can use something like XAMPP to test things out
    on your own computer:

apache friends - xampp (no affil.)

However, I prefer to have a duplicate development site
live on my own server so that I can test everything on
the same server that the main site is actually on.

Shaun's spot on there. I bought a little cheapy .info for $1.50 last year that I use to test out different themes and plugins before I put them on my real sites. I tried doing a LAMP and then a WAMP setup (Linux and Windows) and never got too far with it...it was easier just to spend the $1.50 on the .info and go through HostGator's hosting.

I've been using Hostgator for over 2 years...

You could go into your c-panel (you can get there thru port 2082 by going to http://www.yourdomain . com:2082)

Scroll down to sub-domains and create one. You can name it anything you want. Go back to cpanel, and go to the icon named Fantastico Deluxe... Use that utility to install WP into your subdomain.

Hint: After installing, go straight to Settings/Privacy in WP dashboard and click "ask search engines not to index this site" - That way, your practice posts won't be showing up in google...

After you're comfortable, you can go ahead and install WP into your main domain...

If you have any questions, pm me...

You can also install Wordpress on HostGator server, then change the local hosts file on your computer so you can see the site on the web via the domain name, as if the DNS was already pointing to the HG servers - even when they are not! It requires you to enter the IP address and domain name of the WP site into the hosts file on your computer. I do this all the time. Here's a link to HG help desk telling you how to do it: How do I change my hosts file? « HostGator.com Support Portal
