Learning to use adwords to advertise site?

Where can I find information on using adwords to advertise our website?

I've sorta given up googling adwords because it doesn't seem to answer my specific questions. I even talked to an adwords agent and he wasn't helpful.

For example, one of my questions: I understand that companies bid to show their ads in the search results. If I have a store that sells Apple, then I would have to compete with the thousands of stores that also want to advertise their Apple products through google.

Now (and this is a bit extreme), I want to sell my iPads to Haiti. For the sake of argument, I'm the only store that sells iPads to haiti. If I go to Google Haiti and do a search of Apple, not one single ad will be shown.

Ideally, shouldn't it be simple and cheap to display an ad there? I mean, nobody else sells Apple products in Haiti. But apparently that's not how it works in these cases.

Yes, you can segment to whom you have your ads shown... By territory and/or language.
    Didn't you find those options?

I understand I can segment by territory and/or language.

The problem, like I described in the post, is that their way of charging doesn't make sense.

Your OP is the reason I started my site back in 2007. You can't get a straight answer from Google if you're an affiliate marketer. They won't give it to you because they don't want you advertising on their system.

HOWEVER if you're a business owner, they LOVE you and will work with you.

For the Haiti Apply example. It doesn't matter if no other ads are showing. The product must be something that Google approves of and must not be an affiliate promoting it. (there are exceptions) But if an affiliate were to try, he has to offer some kind of very unique value to do so. Otherwise he'll be labelled as a bridge page or arbitrage page.

        Thanks for your post.

In the Haiti case, my product is Apple (ipad, iphone, etc) and Google approves that. My understanding is that my ad would always be displayed because nobody else is competing against me (ie. I'm the only one advertising Apple product to Haiti in Google Haiti).

I did talk to an adwords rep, but their pricing doesn't make sense. They wanted to charge me USD$1.15/click for an ad in another country where the keyword I was using did not return any ads (using Google Keyword Tool).

In theory, if nobody uses that keyword for a specific country (google domain), why would I have to pay over a dollar/click?

This is very true! I had my adwords account banned twice, and after throwing my hands up, and instead of sending an abusive email, I delicatly just told them I will work with them, and do what they told me, and worked with them until I had a page and a funnel that suited me and them also.

It is true, they will work with you if you want. Do not go down the abusive, I HATE ADWORDS AND NEED TO SEND A DIRTY NASTY EMAIL.... that will not get you far.

Remember you need their business and they need yours. SO use that to your advantage. Do not get mad, and be obnoxious.... just meet google in the middle. They are willing to work with you, and I have found their communication rather slow, but still good.
