Pimp slapped by Adwords! How wrong is this?

Alright check this out,

I was promoting my site on Adwords right, I started my bid off at like 50 cents. I noticed that my ads were not running and after browsing around my campaigns I noticed that it said that I did not reach the min. bid for certain keywords.

The min was $1.00. Under no circumstances would I ever pay one dollar for a click but since I had $50 in free credits I said what the hell I'll just use those free credits up real quick.

I checked back later and noticed my ads were not showing again! So I check the keywords and it said the same thing! Now the min bid for the same keywords was $2.50!

So I said you know what, I'm going to bid the min. just to see. I checked back later and guess what? Yep, not showing AND the min. bid was now at over $4.

So again I bid the min, checked back later, and again no ads showing and this time the min. bid is over $5.00! WTF!!!!

So yes I bid over $5 just to see if they would jack it again. This time they did NOT jack it, BUT my ads are STILL not showing!!!!

What the hell is up with that? Anyone ever experince such BS with Google before?

Do you mind sharing your landing/destination page?

    It could be that;

    - you're new and have no previous Adwords history
    - the market for which keywords you're bidding on is competitive
    - your landing page sucks (poor quality score)

If your QS does not meet with Google's requirements to include your ad or link in the SERPs, your bid amount will not matter.

Improve the QS so that you can both help Google provide a good user experience for their user base as well as get Google users to your site.

yup, they did the same to me, and charged me twice at $25 a click... they put it up to $25 min bid, the sods, and I only put it up as 0.25 and I checked and triple checked, I know for certain it was 25 cents...

I think their coupon thingy is full of **** and just try to use it to get ppl to use adwords.

Egads ... I pay just 2 cents per click for large Google display ads. If I had to pay that much, I'd be out of business.

You probably need to increase your quality score. Make sure your ad and your landing page are highly relevant to each other. Make sure your headline is relevant to the keywords you're bidding on. Go through your landing page. Is there a good amount of high quality content that is highly relevant to your keywords? If you're noticing the theme is relevancy, that's because it is. I don't use too much PPC. For me it's mostly used to test headlines, sales pages and other elements of certain campaigns. After that I ramp up traffic in other means. But you should be able to get clicks for way less than $5.00, and probably less than $1.00 for most keywords.

You just have to make your landing page have value to the visitor. If it doesn't (or G thinks it doesn't) you'll pay dearly for the privilege of using Adwords to send people there. I hope this helps.

I'm getting $.05 clicks with many of my campaigns, but the landing pages are well optimized.

Remember, Google wants for its users to have a good experience using the SE. If the search results are irrelevant to a user's search terms, they'll go elsewhere. And if the users go elsewhere, so will the advertisers.

Google's business model is "ad network" and *verifiable* relevance is key to 1) its audience so they come back, and 2) its customers, who purchase advertising based upon that audience's loyalty. If the Google bot cannot verify that your site is relevant to your keywords and ad text, you'll be asked to pay exorbitant bid prices and probably get no impressions at all. That bot is what determines your site or page relevance to your ad.

If all you had to do is throw money at it, it would be like the scenario I described in previous threads. Back in the '90s when Yahoo! was the only game in town, the porn guys owned the SERPs for keywords from "oven mitts" on up.

The displayed ads are as much of the "user experience" as organic results, from Google's perspective. If you remember their business model and their need to keep everything returned on the SERPs relevant from the bot's perspective, it's easier to grasp.

That said, the bot will look as hard at your home page as it will your landing page for relevance. So optimize your entire site, not just the LP. THEN optimize your campaign with many ads, ad groups and thousands of keywords, not a handful. You can tweak and prune as you monitor performance.

    Hope that helps.
