Confused about own links in replies...

I've searched the FAQ, and can't find a direct answer to this issue. But I could have sworn links to one's own site (or page within one's own site) aren't allowed. I'm not talking about signature links, I'm talking about links inside a reply.

Example:

OP: "Blah blah blah"
Reply: "Oh yeah, you can find that at www.mysite.com/this.page"

Is that allowed? I can't imagine that it is, else everyone would do it. Yet I've seen some people who've been here since 2004 doing this stuff. If it isn't allowed, are we supposed to report it?

Thanks in advance.

If it helps someone with a problem then it is ok

If you are on a thread and someone is selling something and you post a link to a competitors site then it would not be ok

I think that it doesn't actually say that anywhere, expressly?

In practice, it's "trial by Warrior" and boils down to "what's tolerated".

It's usually clear whether people's motivation for doing that is to be helpful or to be promotional. If a few Warriors feel that the motive was "to be promotional" and report the post, it's going to be soft-deleted until a moderator reviews it and makes a decision, anyway.

Clearly, people linking to something broadly non-commercial, non-promotional and informational is very different from people linking to a review they've written which is plastered with affiliate links, isn't it?

I think it's up to you.

I report some of them, if they're blatantly promotional in intent, because I think that's an abuse of the forum. If enough people do that, a moderator will decide. But often that clearly isn't the intent at all, and there's nothing promotional there anyway, which seems perfectly alright?
