Interview with Mike Geary, how he makes 1 million per month

Just stumbled upon this link of a very indepth interview with Mike Geary, the creator the TruthAboutAbs.com website that is currently being sold through Clickbank.

In this article, Mike provides LOADS of really valuable content about how he developed his product and turned it into a business that makes him 1 million dollars per month... that's right, he made just over 11 million last year, from this product alone!

It's definitely a worthy read, check it out here --> The Truth About Abs: How To Make $1,000,000 Per Month with Digital Products (Plus: Noah Kagan results)

In America anyone can go straight to the top. And here's what's exciting- It is the bottom that is crowded, not the top.

    Excellent interview!

Interesting how he says he would not do anything differently, even his mistakes - because he learnt a lot from his mistakes.

    Good stuff. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, this guy makes so much on that product. I recently started promoting it through PPC campaigns and it brings in some good conversions.

Especially in the weight loss niche, you can say that he has a pretty good piece of the pie right now.

Are you promoting the offer via Adwords or Facebook? If Facebook, are you driving clicks to a separate landing page off Facebook or a Facebook page itself?

That was an excellent read. Anyone struggling with their business should read the article. Notice that Mike Geary's success to achieve those numbers took 5 years of hard work. It took him 2 years to get to 50k per year. It was a nice read because of his unabashed candor, something that you don't find very often in these kinds of interviews. He also shared some of his tipping points.

He treats his customers like "gold".

He treats his affiliates like "gold" and he goes into some detail on he accomplished that in the article.

He also took some chances, took some risks, lost money, but never lost his focus.

Another thing I like about this article is that he went into a very competitive niche, one that a lot of people have called "saturated" and yet he was able thrive.

There are a lot of powerful lessons in this article, none of which have anything to do with SEO tricks, push button software, or the latest traffic gimmick.

I liked this quote when he was asked about media buying (If he had 5k to start off with):

The most common mistake is not letting enough traffic flow to see true trends. Some people shut down their campaigns after only a couple hundred clicks thinking that it won’t be profitable, but they haven’t let it run long enough to see for sure. For example, a newbie might shut down their campaign after only 500 clicks and 1 sale. But what if they would have made 3 sales in the next 500 clicks, for a total of 4 sales in 1,000 clicks? Data can be pretty variable when you’re still under 1,000 clicks. I generally test an ad for at least a couple thousand clicks. However, keep in mind that I deal mostly with the fitness and nutrition niches and they require high volumes of clicks to see true data.

Another big mistake is not split testing enough variations of ads. Many advertisers give up on losing campaigns after testing only a couple ad creatives. However, I’ve found that simple modifications — such as a one word variation in a headline or a slightly different image or background color — can be the difference between a losing campaign and a profitable campaign. In some instances, I’ve used the exact same ad text combined with slightly different pictures and seen DOUBLE the click-through rate (CTR).

The last mistake is also very common: most advertisers aren’t willing to lose money to find what works. I EXPECT to lose money the first time I test a campaign. Then I tweak the ad copy, offer, etc. based on our testing results, and we see if we can restart the campaign a second time and make it profitable based on what we learned [i.e. what lost the least money, etc.]

For example, if I do a $10,000 traffic buy test on a new website that we haven’t worked with before, we’ll usually only make back maybe $6,000 to $7,000 for a net loss of about $3,000. But we also usually learn that one of our ad variations performed MUCH better than the others, and we can work with that specific ad from that point forward and possibly negotiate lower rates. Sometimes we find that the numbers are too far off to work in the future, so we just decide to cut all ties with that particular website and not buy traffic from them again if they can’t offer lower rates.
I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

What I find funny is that if you scroll to the comments, a few comments down is one from a guy named Timmay.

He's talking about Six Pack Shortcuts, and at the time it wasn't all that big, but I think that dude now makes over $1M a year.

He's asking if Tim knows him to see if he could do a side-by-side marketing comparison because their business model is very similar but the SPS is no where near the top of ClickBank like Truth About Abs is...

I've seen a link to the interview before, but it's well worth reading again.

Very committed marketer who truly understands his metrics. As Dan Kennedy would say, "He knows his numbers"....it reminds us that it's about more than being creative and how taking the long term view can pay off.

It's funny if you read down into the comments, there's someone remarking that he doesn't understand why Geary uses such a long, cluttered sales page after all this time?....and I thought, "Do you suppose maybe he's TESTED IT, that's why?"

What a great and inspiring article! Thanks for sharing! I think we cal all related to these sentences:

"To build more time freedom into my life. I desperately wanted to design my new life with much more free time to enjoy my hobbies, friends, and family. This “time freedom” was actually a higher priority for me than the financial rewards of starting a web-based business. And this may sound funny, but I also had a goal to eventually NEVER have to wake up to an alarm again (aside from traveling). I despise waking up to an alarm!"

I had not seen this article yet - thanks for sharing. I was disappointed at first thinking it was just a disguised sales pitch. I'm glad I kept reading because there are some great insights from someone that knows his stuff. Is he a War Room member?

I wish I could do this...

The usual steps for a media buy on a large site are:

    1. Run $5-10k test campaign (most times, initial test loses money).
Even though a lot of us can't do $10k "test" campaigns or some of the other high dollar things he mentions the principles and methods will still work at smaller scales.

Maybe not rival Apple, but it's great insight for someone who wants to start something similar. Knowledge is essential and Mike shares some of the best here. But after that, it's all about taking action on what you think works best for you.

Read it a few times. Very inspirational.

The thing that set Mike apart from his competitors was (1) his mastery of paid traffic (which anyone can learn) and (2) his high % to affiliates, which again anyone can do.

I do not want to minimize his accomplishments, but anyone can do it. I am working on it, and I WILL be on that level in the next three years.

The most important lesson learnt from that interview is one word: FOCUS. It is so easy to start doing multiple things and after a few months or years down the line, you suddenly realize that you are doing hundreds of things and nothing is working out well. He stuck to one thing and did it well and it helped.

Is this a good article? Sure... but everyone seems to be missing a critical point.

"The business as a whole (all three components listed above) generates just shy of $1 million in revenue per month. Total revenue for last year was approximately $11 million."

What's the key word in that snippet from the article?

If you don't know, you're missing something VERY important... the key word is "revenue". Does he turn a good profit? Sure, but is he turning a profit of a million a month? Hell no... revenue does NOT equal profit.

The biggest marketers out there are spending a ton of money on advertising, and seeing a return on that investment... Nearly everyone I know with an AMEX Black Card is a big advertiser, not a guy with deep pockets. They're spending 100k - 200k (or more) a month on advertising to bring in a 10-20% return on that spend...

Saying "I do 150k a month in revenue" sounds a lot more impressive than saying "I spend 125k to make 25k" a month... Most people can't wrap their minds around spending even $100 on advertising, let alone $100,000 on it.

    Big difference.

  • Here's the key snippet in my opinion from the entire article:

At the time, I didn’t understand that you actually have to DRIVE traffic to your site, as people won’t just magically find you.
I agree entirely with that quote. Assuming you have a quality product and a converting sales page, it all becomes a traffic figures game. It's by far the most important factor for any website.
