I'm lost and confused

I realize that this should go into a "for dummies" section but I've never found one of those here on WF so please bear with me.

I have a book that I've written in Word.

I want to put a cover on it (because books have covers).

I want to be able to put the book onto a CD to sell it, or sell it as an eBook. I want both versions to have the cover on it.

How do I make this happen?

I have tried adding a cover page through Word and it looks like crap AND adds another page so my page numbering is all screwed up. The index starts on page 2 now. UGH! NOT what I want!!

I created a cover (that I'm pretty happy with) using Quick 3D cover. But how do I get the pages of the book "into" the cover? OR how do I get the cover "around" the pages?

I need it to be all one file when I burn it to disk or save it as a PDF- NOT TWO files (The cover being one file & the book pages being another.) so that it doesn't look stupid.

I'm guessing it's something simple that I've overlooked but for the life of me I can't figure out how to do this. (And it was supposed to go to the advertiser today.... 48 hours later and I'm still stuck.)

Thanks!!
Kay

    LoL LKayR,

You are a dummy for real pal!

MS Word 2010 has an option to save the document as PDF file. If you don't have it then try OpenOffice writer to get the job done.

In order to get your book a cover, try to create one JPEG image in Photoshop illustrating what's inside the book. Give your book a title, a strong headline and a by-line on the cover. Save this file as JPEG in Photoshop.

Open your book in either word of writer and insert a page at position 1. Insert your cover image at page one and save it as PDF.

Alternatively, you can go to fiverr.com and get your book a nice and professional cover, a box and a cd all done just for $5.

Trust me, either way you will learn a lot

    Hey Kay,

I would call you a dummy but then that would make me one too cos I'm useless at that sort of stuff. Follow what Rahman says above but if you can't get it done in 1 or 2 attempts just hire an expert at fiverr.

They'll do it straight away and it'll look great! Don't waste too much time or get frustrated with it - just outsource it and for 5 bucks let someone else worry about it - Noel.

Thanks Sarahman- but that's what I've been doing and it's NOT getting me the results that I want. By adding a cover page, it's adding a page to the over all book- which is resulting the index starting on page 2- not page 1 which is what I want.

I know how to save files as a PDF. I don't need help with that.
I have a cover that I like. It is saved as a .jpg. I don't need help with that.

What I DO need help with is getting the JPG cover added to the .docx file before I save it all as a PDF and I need it done so that the cover is NOT counted as page 1.

Or is there really no way around that and I have to just renumber every darn page manually - AGAIN??!!!

    Any other help??
    Thanks!!

Try Desktop Publishing Software – PagePlus X6 from Serif Not an affiliate link, though it should be.

It is working very well for me in formatting print books. It has a relatively short learning curve and great support.

I think it around $100.00 US. and may have a limited use trial. It has an ebook module also for mobi, epage format and PDF...I haven't used the ebook section but will soon.

Word is unstable and will frustrate you until you want to puke. Open office is better but still has some quirks.

Also, Dennis Becker has a ebook formatter available in his program kindlecasestudy, that you might want to check out... though I have purchased, but haven't used it.

    Kay,

Sounds like you just need to start your numbering at page 2. This way you have the cover page then the next page starts as page 1? Check out this office article: Start page numbering on page 2 - Word - Office.com

Thanks quadxnet- I had tried that but it still wasn't numbering pages correctly. I followed the steps in the link you provided but that didn't do the trick either. HOWEVER- I did some more playing around with the numbering, adding a cover page, tweaking the footers and what did end up doing the trick was to start numbering at zero. I didn't even realize that was an option.

What that did was page the cover page #0, then the index was page #1, and so forth. So, the end result is what I wanted. It is now a very pretty PDF, that is numbered correctly, I still have a little hair left and perhaps tonight I can finally get some sleep. This will be sent off to the advertisers today, ahead of schedule actually. So thank you very much for your help! It wasn't exactly what I needed but it made me think about what I had already been doing in a different way. Success, no matter how it is reached, is still success!

MS word 2010 has a feature called "cover page" which allows you to add a page on the front of your document without affecting the numbering. You can get a trial copy here: Microsoft Office 2010 Trial

Transfer your book from Word to Adobe first before you can sell it through ebook.
