Yes, I think it all depends on your niche/product. There are no hard and fast rules for video marketing. It's just like any other type of marketing where you just test, test, test to see what works and tweak it until you find something that works for you. Even then, you continue to test and tweak.

By using keywords in the name of your video, in the tags section and make a fairly lengthy description of your video as well.

Study the videos on YouTube that have the highest number of views and comments and model your videos that way.

1. Submit your videos to as many video sharing sites as you possibly can. Use a list like this Video Sites like Youtube: A Huge List of Video Sharing Websites & Services - you may want to Google something more up to date though.

2. Where possible and appropriate, include a text version of your video content in the description box each time.

3. Do your keyword research and include your selected keywords in the tags of your video submissions. Use the usual social bookmarketing etc to create backlinks.

4. Select your titles carefully, and make sure the start of your video description has a brief summary.

5. Brand your YouTube channel, along with any other video sharing site channels you can register.

Those are just some general ideas but can work really well. A single video on YouTube may only get 0-100 views most of the time, but with lots and lots of submissions among multiple video sharing websites and multiple video content, it can really rack up to a lot of traffic.

Because your goal is just to gain traffic, what you only need to do is to catch the eyes of potential customers. As we all know, google search is composed of websites mostly. So, when they type a certain keyword, and your video shows up, it will really gain attention. It has been proven that videos have a higher click-through rate than websites. So, once they click on your video, of course they will be brought to the main video-site, let's say for example, youtube. Oh I forgot, ALWAYS put the link that you want to promote in the topmost part of the description box. Okay, so once the potential customer is watching your video on youtube, then they will click on the link that you put in the description. There! Increase in traffic

If you use direct-linking, then you might need to put high-quality content so that you can pre-sell to the viewers. So, longer videos woould be necessary. But, if the link that you're promoting is a link to your site, then shorter videos would do.
