I'd say as far as Twitter, one of the better ways to get followers without having any tools to use, would be to make sure you post informative tweets or tweets that catch the interest of your niche followers. I also find that posting something short and helpful and telling your people to RT it helps build more followers slowly as well.

Also, you could go through the #discover section of Twitter and do a search for people in your niche that you could help answer questions for. So for instance, if you're in the PC repair niche, and you're looking for followers, do a search in the Discover for something like "PC not working" and then find followers that have that phrase. Answer their questions or help them, and you may be able to ask them to follow you for more info, etc.

You can do the same or similar for Facebook as well... the more you network on there and the more you build on followers and so forth, the better. I would definitely NOT recommend buying any gigs or anything that says they'll guarantee you to have followers, because they would be all bots.

Hope this helps a bit. I do the above for twitter but also combine my use with my TweetAdder account for an extra boost.

I hate to state the obvious but if you want real followers then provide quality content, make sure your content is easily shared by putting social media buttons on your content and ask your visitors to tweet/share/like/+1, if your content is good things should happen for you.

There's some great advice here already. Of course, your best bet is always to provide quality and be involved with your fans, followers and friends.

But if you want a little extra boost, nothing too huge, you might try SocialAdr.com. They are well known and well established. Recently, they added Facebook Likes to their Twitter and Google+ services.

So in addition to the 20 or so social bookmarking sites, your content can be shared by SocialAdr.com members across FB,Twitter and G+.

SocialAdr.com has a free account, and upgrade options. I'm not posting any links here, but I do use them.

It's not a magical solution, but it does help

First and foremost I'd say link to all your social profiles from your main site. Until Tuesday of this week I hadn't touched my Facebook or Twitter account since January but I was still getting a few likes and followers each week, just from having the links on my website.

Secondly, share relevant content from other people. Don't just go on and post your own stuff. Read your stream and if there's something good in there which you think your followers will benefit from then re-tweet it, like it or share it. When you share content in this way, the content producers will pick up on it and some will return the favour.

Thirdly, get involved with the community. Reply to tweets, comment on Facebook posts and try to get discussions going. As I said above, I only started using my Facebook fan page and Twitter account again on Tuesday of this week. However, I managed to get a mention on Twitter off Ask Men simply by commenting on one of their tweets and adding some information (it was a tweet on the new Olympic kit with photos. I commented how I liked the fact that Sir Chris Hoy had said in another article about the kits; "I just want to look cool". They then used the quote and gave me a mention.).

Basically, you just need to get involved in the community and people will start picking you up.

    Hope this helps,

    Tom

SMO is all about timing and creating a fan following. Post interesting and meaningful content over social networks and people will follow you. Don't flood them with something to buy or advertise yourself just create a personal touch first.

As far as twitter, I founded it easy, if you tweeting something of other people interest, they will be coming. As far as facebook I still find it a little harder, because people don't just search it. Try to keep a badge on visible area of your site

I've gone from 20, to 89, to over 376 in 3 days. I put a post on here about it, but it got deleted.

    Use FIVERR.com !!!

They can give you a lot of likes on facebook and twitter real fast.
You can choose those that offer targeted likes to your niche/niches. It seriously works and is the best way to get likes fast. After that the likes will come rolling, because people usually like a page that is liked by many others( Is it confusing ?).
I tried it and it works wonders, go for it.

All it costs is US$5 !

It is just conversation. What is the best way to be popular? Say something awesome....be clever.

No, the best way is to give the other person what they want. What do they want? To hear the sound of their name...and be promoted.

RT others...talk about how great Burt's post is, or ask Sally about her blog. Keep promoting! People might not join as fast as you like, but those that do will promote you.

Twitter is easy. I write for several travel blogs/news sites so I'm always Tweeting content and links (and not just my own stuff) related to that. Then I just search for people and organizations related to that industry and follow them, they nearly always follow me back!

    To do this freely,

The way I would be doing it is by personal contact with people.

This is going to take a long time, and is going to be very time consuming.

Depending on how much you value your time, you might be better off paying a company to do this for you.

I look for a company that locationally and demographically targets people to like/ follow like winacomp.com

    Hope that helps!

Don't just concentrate on the number of followers, concentrate on how active they actually are, delivering good content will keep people responsive and this will virally filter through their friends news feeds and you will gain greater followings.

Follow relevant pages and tweeters and converse with these people and others will see them interacting with you and then follow you, it is all about engaging, don't buy or sell followers, treat them well and they will keep coming back for more and eventually financial rewards will start coming your way.

Hold a contest among your existing facebook friends and twitter followers. Make sure the theme and rules of the contest help you FILTER people. You don't want people who aren't really interested. You need to set it up so that you have a clean list of people who can promote you later.
