This website is ranked in the top 100,000 sites in the world. This site is so simple and basic that I almost don't believe it could be getting that much traffic.

I just wanted to get your thoughts on this and what you thought of the site.

Also, I wanted to pose an interesting question for everyone. Could you make a site like this? I know I could, so what's stopping you and I?

Here's the site.

The question isn't how sophisticated the site is. First of all, they have a really interesting niche for themselves where they share weird things which people would be interested in reading about. They're not chasing the same things that 20 million other marketers are chasing. Second, they may well have tons of backlinks and have been working on doing their SEO for a long time.

As a matter of fact, websites which are simple and plain in design do far better in the long run as then the end user can focus on the content. Look at facebook for example - Basic blue mixed with white and it did great.

A new post for every new interesting gadget they find. While it makes for an interesting site, it's not really unique as far as topics covered. I've seen hundreds of sites that are pretty much the same.

The 250k backlinks according to Majestic might be part of the reason it ranks well...

That's true, i've seen a bunch of sites like this as well. So how is someone able to get that any backlinks to a site like this? Is it possible to do it with white hat methods?

Yes, according to Alexa it is ranked 79,xxx. Why wouldn't it be true?

There are other sites that give much more accurate data. Alexa should not be taken literally, you can jump 10,000s of thousands in rankings in a very short time.
Interesting, could you share where more accurate data could be found?

I think they say it's not "necessarily" true because if you wanted to you could send a TON of paid traffic to it, real or not. All that traffic would increase it's alexa rank. Lot's of people get scammed like that on flippa. Nonetheless, this site is clearly not in that category as it is ranked at the top for many keywords.

I like the site. Maybe you and I could make a site like it, but they did make it. It's quite compulsive reading so will keep visitors reading, and coming back.

If they browse their own site often, and have an Alexa bar installed, it can increase the operator's ranking's dramatically...
