I just heard that from now on, 700+ words articles would be a lot better than the 500+ words articles. Is that true?

One more thing, Does Google now consider 200-400 words articles blog comments?

I cannot comment as far as Google is concerned, I wouldn't know. Most writing clients I have picked up, and readers in the two niches I am beginning to work in have all responded the best to 1200-1500 word articles. From time to time I will do a 2000, not often.

I say this because post/article length should reflect what your users want, not what you think that Google wants.

Articles are written for quality not length. When an article is written you should write it with the reader in mind. These type of articles provide quality backlinks which are what you want and also when submitted to directories they have the chance to be syndicated and provide hundreds if not thousands of backlinks to your site. Quality backlinks are what you are looking for, not just a link back that no one will click on. You are trying to avoid people reading the first line or two of your article then going somewhere else.

Bottom line is that you should write the most interesting and highest quality article that your ability will allow. The only type of length requirements that should be recognized are those of the directory that you will be submitting to.

    Hope this helps.

Write to deliver value and inform/entertain - not just to reach some meaningless word limit.

I would much rather read one sentence that actually teaches me something useful, than 700 words of "waffle".

It's all about quality, not quantity.

Now if you can combine the two... you're onto a winning formula.

Somebody is telling you a bunch of meaningless crap. Stop listening to him. If he's in the same room with you, smack him and tell him to shut up.

Word count rules are ridiculous. I have a few things that I keep in mind when I'm writing articles:

          >> At least 400 words in most cases (personal rule)
          >> Write until it's complete
          >> Don't add needless filler crap
          >> You've only got a few seconds to grab the reader
          >> Break it up with bullets and/or subheadings

Time is precious. People are easily distracted. Your articles should do at least one of two things:

          >> Provide valuable information
          >> Solve a problem

I reserve the larger word counts for tutorials and how to pieces...not average articles. I break up the content for two kinds of readers:

          >> The ones who scan just for the bits of info they need
          >> The ones who will read the entire article

Use as many words as it takes to make your point.

One thing's for sure, 700 words will cost you more than 500 words given they're on the same quality level...so how does that affect people? Well, you're either paying more or writing more. That's all.

"I would much rather read one sentence that actually teaches me something useful, than 700 words of "waffle"."<-----haha, wow; very nice way of putting it.

Yeah, agreed with most of the responses here. Think to yourself... what would give your the ability to, in the future, create good sales copy; being concise, providing value, or writing quickly or whatever? Yeah. Also, what is going to take you to a mental place where you can make money (read: somewhere, where your focus is on helping people out); writing many words or writing good stuff?

Not being harsh, here; but it's important that you switch your mentality.
