Are all the good domains taken?

If you have a unique concept and want a branded domain, then leave the exact matches out.

However if you are going into niche marketing, then yes HAVE a look at the exact searches per month. An exact match domain is not necessary, obviously it has a little bit of advantage but anything can be achieved with good content and good off page seo.

If your looking for an exact match, do not look past any tlds past com, net and org.

A good search amount would be about 5000 exact matches, but remember, you can't just make tons of money just targeting one keyword. Target many keywords around it, do some keyword research.

For the last part, if it's good, short and rememberable and recommendidly a .com, then yes, go for it!

Spot on.

Always write for secondary keywords too.
One of my websites is actually earning money from a random article about another keyword, even when "main keyword" is in my domain name (EMD).

You definitely have to get creative these days to come up with a good domain. I think that not trying to hit the exact match is great advice. I never saw the real benefit in it anyways (especially for long tail keywords. Who remembers a url that long?). Give the user unquestionable value that solves their problems, and I'm certain your domain name will matter very little.

If you're looking to simply rank your site (not concerned about branding etc), then simply add a letter to the end of the domain. I've found this works pretty well for me.

This is exactly what I did, for instance.. NamecheapZ.com or JSnamcheap.com.. namecheap, godaddy, hostgator, bluehost are fine.. but don't try Amazon, amazon is extremely strict with this, they will do whatever they can to take down your domain..

I agree creativity is the answer although every man and his dog wants a com prefix, use the others. Another thing to try if you are struggling is to use thesaurus.com for variations of the attached word that is with the kwword you want, example farmvillegames could be f...adventure.

By using this way to find good domain names, I've found by accident from one of the godaddy operators I own some juicy ones names worth more than 3 times the money I paid. All the best.

Not really, why don't you try godaddy auctions? I always pick my domains from there and they are all aged, it costs me 20$ more but I get what I want

Absolutely not! Just get clever about it if you are going for exact match by adding prefixes and suffixes to get what you want in a .com domain.

However, even if they were, it wouldn't matter a whole lot of you put the exact keyword match you want in the subdomain name and do other SEO.

In the UK, at least, these are 'adult' domains. They are automatically blocked by child filters, and are designed for pornographic usage...so I don't think I'd buy one.

Is it the same in the US?

I search all day for domain names just in case i come across a good one, and i found one last month. No one yet grabbed speedingticketfight and it's a .com so i got it. I keep the screen up all day searching for keywords, and domain names.

I just add a word or letter to the end of the keyword that I want if I want a keyword domain. I also don't have any problem getting ranking for brandable domains. They rank just fine if you do the onpage and offpage SEO.

There's also plenty of rumors around that Google is giving exact match domains a lot less weight now.

Agreed!!

A couple of years ago I could pick up EMD names and get them ranked top 1-3 page one with little or no SEO now they do still rank but you have to work them a lot harder

Nah, they're not all taken. If you need some help with suggestions, try a site like namingforce.com or squadhelp.com. I'll bet you'd be surprised how many awesome domain suggestions you get when running a contest on a site like those.

Really it also depends on what kind of domain you are hoping for....skype.com was unlikely to be taken until someone "made it up" and decided to brand it. Squidoo.com is another good example...

If you're chasing domains like cellphones.com or insurance.com, that's obviously pretty pointless. Those are taken.

Not probably all, but those which are common are probably already taken. So if you want a particular domain, you can just wait for it to expire or buy from the one who owns it if you cant wait.

A lot of the time, if you pick an EMD with a specific long tail keyword and all of the domains with prefixes and suffixes are taken, then pick another keyword and/or niche. Seeing all possible domains taken is a good indicator that a bunch of people are building niche sites in that niche. So, you will be competing directly with them.

My advice for you is to pick a different niche, a different sub-niche, or at least a different keyword to try to rank for. You don't want to pick a keyword that has a ton of competition.

Think about this:

Millions of NEW (never done before) searches are made in Google every month (don't ask me for a source, don't have it, but if you think about it you'll understand it's not far from truth, if not the exact truth...).

That said, why waste time, money and resources into something already crowded?

You can imagine your own new and unique word and promote it, like google and amazone did. Nobody knew these names before. Try to create a word as short as possible with good sound. Just for example something like kokobongo.org or mopatam.com

Look they are still free, and i like how mopatam sounds M O P A - T A M.

If you need to be industry specific you can add thematic keywords. Fox exmaple mopatamfinance.com or mopataminvestment.com.
Here is some variations with kokobongo - kokobongoelectrics.com or kokobongomutualfund.com

Can't tell you how many times I've had a great idea all for it to be shattered by it being near impossible to get an effective domain. And 99% of the domains aren't even being used obviously which makes it that much more frustrating.

I'm here to save the day nitrojeff! lol. No but really, what you need to do when coming up with a domain name is get creative. But, first and foremost jeff you "HAVE TO" stop letting your ideas for a domain name out to the public. So what you want to do now is come up with another unique domain name and this time, "hush up" about it.

Next, if this domain name is already taken then you can use this simple yet powerful method to make you domain name unique. What you can do is okay lets take "google.com" for an example. You can come up with variations of google.com with google101.com, therealgoogle.com, googlenoodle.com, thegooglepowerhouse.com and so on. And that's just in case your desired domain name is taken.

But, if its not taken you can still make it catchy to people who visit your website. For instance problogger.net. Once you hear that phrase you are automatically going to want to visit because of how catchy it sounds. I hope this helps

I have picked up two incredibly nice domain names in the last two weeks, because other people sat on their hands and did not search them out.
