I have used default wordpress themes to build websites long ago and I faced no problems promoting products. By the way why you are asking this question.

It's just lazy and makes your product/site seem very unprofessional, IMO.

In think, what we can draw from the responses thus far, is: make it professional. Period. If you can't do that yourself, outsource it to someone; or get a theme that's professional as per default. It would be pretty wasteful to be awesome in every other department, but having a looks-like-crap-website; right?

I just used it as a basis to build this site: Eye Sugery Consultants

Of course it was heavily modified but I just wanted to show what was possible.

    Cheers

      I don't use Wordpress.

But speaking as a customer, internet browser, marketer and critic/admirer of "other people's sites", I think the Twenty Eleven theme is a particularly good, particularly pleasant, particularly professional-looking one which isn't nearly as widely used as it should be.

I think, if you're going with Wordpress, it's a good idea.

Those themes are so customizable, I'd venture to bet you came across one in your internet travels w/o even knowing it.

Anyway - I think what makes 2011 a good theme to consider is that I do believe they added some mobile intuitive features into it. I'm not using it as I have a framework I am now devoting myself to - but if I didn't have the money/framework, or needed something solid with some good options then that theme would most certainly have my attention as something valid and worthy to use.

Really? So if you found a site with some awesome content, and it had nothing to do with being a wordpress guru - you would discredit what ever product was being promoted just because they decided to use a simple and easy to manage theme?

That is the case. I am just starting to design a site for my wife using it. It is powerful and flexible. I highly recommend it.

Just brought it up on my phone and it is mobile optimized out of the box. Love it!

    Depending on the niche? Absolutely.

Generally when I think of good content, I think of an investment of time, whether it's gaining experience in a field, or having a site with deep content, or a professional looking visual appearance. We all calculate that when we decide the credibility of a site. If someone is using Twenty Eleven unntouched, they probably didn't do much thinking about the specific needs of that niche.

And most visitors online are thinking about it when they buy, whether they know it or not.

Who said anything about untouched? He wants to modify it and most people do that. It is a great them to modify and make very professional sites.

        (i) Yes, it can be changed. But, as Tim pointed out, you do need to know a bit of coding to make the changes. If you can't do it yourself, it's simple/quick enough to do that you should be able to hire it done for a small price.

(ii) No, not without modifying the template.

        (iii) Yes, you can.

It is always shocking to see how narrow-minded people can be...

Outside of the blogger/IM circles nobody gives a sh*t about WordPress and its default themes :p

Most of my offline friends (highly educated professionals using the internet every day in their work and also for entertainment) never heard about WP... until I told them about it. Go figure

So, 99% of the "niches", which means EVERYTHING outside of the MMO stuff do NOT judge a site based on the use of the 2011 theme. Simply, because they don't know WTF TwentyEleven is.

LOL, that was pretty straight - but I see you are from India and I can't tell if you are looking for an answer to that.

I'm not Istvan -so I'm not speaking for him but will give you my impression of what he is saying there.

He is basically saying that most people using the internet - the majority - who are not internet marketers - have no clue how to build a website or what wordpress is or even what theme you are using on your site.

Sites can be pretty - but what is more important is their ease of use and functionality to the end user. Build with the end user/viewer in mind. Great content on the site is going to trump an ugly site any day of the week. Have fun customizing your theme, but don't let the theme itself hold you back from getting to your end goals.

            Go to Appearance, Header.

Go to Browse in the Upload image section, find the header image you have created. If you had used xheader you can specify the size to fit 2011 exactly by moving the arrows from default 750 x 175 to 1000x288.

You can put text and images in the header.

When you upload it it will show you what it looks like. If you have a smaller height image but width is the same it will prompt you to move the selection to the part of the header you want to show.

If you don't like it you can just Remove Header Image (option lower down on same page) and put text in instead if you prefer.

Can I use Paint instead of xheader. Actually I don't know any of these two. Which should I learn & go for. What for xheader is used & what for paint is used.

Then we have another aspect: we know that theme is the WP default, BUT vast majority of users really don't know and don't care - in fact they appreciate a plain, white theme.

You need to know some basic coding to modify the theme a bit to do these things.

      i) If you have Photoshop (or a free alternative), this is very simple to do. Simply create a new document to those specs, then paste in the images you'd like to make a part of the header. Resize them so they fit into the document, save it as a .png file, and upload it to the header section of the 2011 theme. I do it all the time using 2011 and none of my sites look like any of my other sites.

ii) Same trick as #1. Just create a banner with nothing but text on it.

iii) Yes. 2011 also has 6-10 default banners as well.

Try doing a youtube search - there are a bazillion how to videos on these things.

Certainly - but you just need to find some instructions - see my first answer.

You can restore the entire theme if something gets really messed up. Or you can replace specific coded pages to reset back to the original.

When I first started with my own hosted wordpress I had to practice re-installing several times until I got it.

Seek out some tutorials, log what you are doing as you are going so you can realize where you mess up (when you mess up because you will mess up ) and don't have a fear that you will single handedly blow up the entire internet from your mistakes - because you won't.

Wordpress has got some really awesome themes and if I remember rightly the Twenty Eleven theme looks a lot like Thesis.

It will be a clean theme so it should be fine to use for SEO etc...

Customize it a little with a header, banner, pics and you can make it your own anyway.

But to answer your question - yes you can use it to build sites with success.
