Do you think Domain Names will sky-rocket in Value?

I have been thinking about the incredible growth of the Internet.

Did you know that there are currently about 100 thousand new users connecting to the Internet per day? Currently we have around 2 billion users online world wide. This is set to more then double in the next ten years.

The Internet is considered the biggest thing of all time.

This led me to think about how domain names are getting harder to find (At least short tail ones anyway). I know there will always be new opportunities that come with new products etc but over all they are becoming more scarce.

We all know that supply and demand is what determines the price of anything, so my question to you is, given this huge amount of explosive growth online over the next ten years combined with a limited amount of domains available do you think that domains (decent ones) will sky rocket in value?

I invested and keep investing a lot of money in domain names. Obviously I expect something in return next years, but I also create a site for every one of them, so... but yeah, domain names will get more valuable along the ride - definitely.

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

Some domains will e like gasoline in the movie 'Road Warrior'
You'll have thugs trying to wrestle it from you, squatters
trying to claim it from you if you leave it unattended, etc.

Seriously, they will become more and more valuable.
I know of a company that paid $600,000 for a simple domain name.

Of course, the domain name isn't a guarantee for success. That
    company died months later...

LOL at least the squatters can't trash your domain in the same way that they could if it were your property.

That is a business model in itself. Buying a domain, creating a profitable website and then flipping it. If this area interests you then go all in.

I've been wondering about this as well.. Everyday there are at least 10,000 domain names being taken away.. I believe signing up for any domains will be much more expensive in a few years time (prolly 5 - 10)

    Talking about supply and demand..

      the short answer is no....

a domain by itself is pretty much worthless save for the category killer one word domains but they are too far and few in between...

keywords used to be important in a domain name for ranking in search engines...but because of over SEO and over marketing, the keywords are not that relevant any more with a tendency to drop even more in relevance...

most domains are undeveloped...their value is held artificially high by squatters who are basically broke...

apps are killing domain value...more and more people are using "apps" and tablets...this does not mean the PC is dead it just means there are a lot of people using apps now...typing in a domain name is not practical on a mutilated laptop that is a pad...

50.000 domains drop from registration every day...a good indicator of the real value of some domains...

so in a nutshell...IF and only IF you actually want to develop the domain, my humble advice is go for it...BUT if you want to just squat on it then don't hope you can make millions or even a living with domaining any more....domainers are a broke desperate bunch

I'm with atvking on this one. Speaking of kings, innovation is the ultimate king. Eventually, some enterprising mind will come up with an alternative. Tough to imagine what that alternative is as it doesn't exist yet, but it is out there, waiting to be discovered. As prices and competition increase, supply (available keyword/business names bought up and registered) decreases, enterprising entrepreneurs will come up with alternatives to domain names being as important as they are today.

The true value of a site is the site itself, not what is in the address bar. Add to that things like social media, where you are informed of/directed to a site by clicking a link word that is not the site address and the importance lessens even more.

It is a successful business model and will continue to be, but, like everything, there is a saturation point. A point where people say, "I can't afford the domain name I want, so I need to find another way".

In my mind, domain name is important for two main reasons. The first being SEO and the second being branding. With the latter being most important for future success.

Say buh-bye to domain names being important for SEO, as that is slowly being eliminated by Google, et al.

Google, facebook, bing, pintrest, etc. Made up words. Billions of dollars in revenue generated for those domain owners. And made up words that domain buyers/resellers never had a chance to make a dime off of, yet an example of some of the most valuable domain names in the world.

While I kick myself in the rear multiple times a day for just now getting involved in online business, I had my first online experience in the early 80's on a sweet TI computer and have been an official web surfer since the late 80's and I have watched domain names evolve. They ain't done with that process yet, and I for one, after almost 3 decades of online experience believe this whole thing called da net is in a stage of infancy.

When all of the good domain names are bought up and the prices skyrocket, alternative solutions will be brought forward by forward thinking minds. In the end, it is the product, not the name. Google would be just as successful today if they called themselves, kablam or flazoo or kapow or bacco or ...

I think Gene Pimentel (who takes an ungodly number of vacations every year ) will disagree. Real domainers are not a broke, desperate bunch.

I think in the short term they are going to drop like a rock. This is simply because Google has gotten more aggressive at deindexing bad domains and keeping their servers clean of spam, so the link farmers aren't going to be able to afford a lot of domains any more.

But in the long run, yes, you may be right. A domain might cost as much as a house in the future.

  • It all depends on the domain name, most will not be worth anything but some will be worth millions the question is to know which if you want to speculate.

    Hello,
the most amazing thing that I have found out about people that own a domain name is that they all think the one that they have is worth a lot of money.

Domain names will definitely start to become more valuable as the market becomes more competitive and the good names become harder and harder to find, IMO.
