So I have started a list. It's growing at a decent rate as I'm getting 400 sign-up a day (approx) with about 80 going through the double opt in process. I have about 1300 now double opt in since 5th March. The percentage that go on to double opt in is about 20%.

The list is built from a site that has a free logo design tool. I have done a deal with a logo maker software developer where I will get 50% as an affiliate.

If you had a list like this that is growing at about 1500 double opt in sign-ups a month how would you use it?

Thanks for your input. I'm looking forward to hearing your ideas.

Simon

Thats questions you should have asked BEFORE you built the list..

I assume that these are all freebie seekers and therefore probably unlikely to buy initially.

You need to build a relationship, let them get to know you, give them lots of tips and advice , maybe do a survey to see what they like. Then sell them something for a few dollars.

The ones that buy are your then your main list.

The rest are list fodder, so do ad swaps with them. You don't even know if they have the ability to buy.

20% optin is very poor, but the numbers you are getting is good.

Yes, BEFORE ... but here I am.

When you say 20% opt in is poor, are you meaning the DOUBLE opt in? For instance I get 400 sign-up but only 80 will follow the double opt in. What would be the norm for double opt in from say 400 sign-ups?

It's an interesting scenario because what I have is a list of people who want a logo design. In my experience, people who want a logo are looking to start a business or are looking to improve their business. Yes, they are starting out looking for a freebie and it might be that they will only ever go for freebies and that's really where I am looking for advice.

What should I pitch to them? How should I pitch it? How often should I communicate with them?

This is my first attempt at making money from a list so I really am novice at this.

      Thanks again.

I just checked and i had 31 signups in the past 24 hours and all confirmed the optin, so 90%+ should be your target.

I would communicate every 2 or 3 days to start with then increase that to 3 or 4 days..never go more than 1 week without emailing though.

If you think they are business owners then do a report called "how to start your business on a shoestring" or something like that see if any of them go for it.

You really will need to know what your customers want.. In the first email they get from me I ask them a question.. "Whats Holding you back" I then know the issues they are having and I can address those and make sure what i send is tailored to them.

Also use the stats you get from your autoresponder (assuming you are using aweber) You can see who opens emails and who doesn't so email the ones who don't and try to get them to open the emails, If they don't delete them from your list.

Do you have any tips on how I can improve the double opt in? What does your aweber email say to tempt them that mine does not?

If you want to seperate your buyers from your freebie seekers at an early stage then offer a OTO after they have opted in

you will have to turn your confirmed opt in off but as long as you provide some great value in your free report and OTO then you will have good open rates and people will want to hear from you

keep the OTO at around $5 and if you really over deliver in your OTO and make it irrisitable then your conversions will be quite good and more importantly you will be finding out faster if people have the ability to pay

based on your current traffic if you make a good OTO i would be surprised if you dont make at least 2 or 3 sales out of every 100 opt ins

that is $15 a day = $450 a month just from your OTO

Simon, I would always say, as many others already have, that you need to have a plan laid out for your list before you actually begin building it.

For example: You'll email them once a week with a freebie for them and then one a month with a paid short report worth $7 to $17.

You really need to think about it before even building the list as, like in your situation, you are left with a list that you've got no idea what to do with.

Well I kind of have a plan. I am going to offer the logo maker software to the list. I will get 50% if they buy. Beyond that I'm a real novice and I think I have a steep learning curve on this. At the moment my plan consists of a one off hit. I joined clickbank because I thought there might be some good stuff on there to offer too but I really didn't see much.

create your own low priced product and sell it for $5 - $7 as a one time offer and then you can build your own buyers list

job done, and this would be waaaay more profitable than promoting an affiliate product

Yes, mine is a free online tool. I have an affiliate agreement with a logo design software maker that runs on Windows and is more substantial than the free online logo maker. I get 50% of which is 20 bucks a sale.

A good way to increase the percentage of double optins is to offer a mystery bonus gift.

Right after somebody enters their email, take them to a page where you say "your free gift is on its way, check your email and confirm etc etc....And I'm also sending you a secret mystery bonus gift, you don't want to miss out on this."

Also, with your first couple of emails work on building rapport with your subscribers. Tell your story. Become a real person to them. End your emails with some cliffhangers.

The best place you can be is when they decide to open your email, not because of the subject line, but because of who it's from.

      Good luck.
