Is Internet Marketing for Drop Outs

I am just being curious.

I noticed almost all internet marketing sales copies I read are for "college drop outs" and they are making money.

Is there a slant to this?

I want to know. I have not made a dime online. I want to "drop out" too and make money.

I'm worse than that. I dropped out of High School. I hated school with a bloody passion.

I'm slightly different though than most because I don't regret it. Never did, never will.

Hated school and just skipped all the time, but loved college. All those parties. Don't know how I ever made my grades.

The fact I think is that Online marketing and all that is new and has grown so fast that there are many many myths about it will make you rich in a week and all that, so people see it as an easy way to make money without the effort of going to college and so their target are people who are a bit lazy and quit college to find an easy way to make a living.

I'm in uni right now and intend to graduate. I enjoy school even though I hate classes, if that makes any sense at all.

But I realize that online marketing, and not the mainstream workplace, is where the money's at for me, so I doubt I'll do anything with my degree(s).

Found IM when I was 1/2 way (level 2) towards my correspondence MechE/B.Eng; needless to say IM took priority, and has been my 100% focus for the last 2-3 years. No regrets, but still aim to complete my degree when I have my IM earning on autopilot for me...

(Race car) mech/aero is still a huge part of my life, and since it's my still day job, funds my IM journey too.

The thing is, most people who like school tend to be hard workers, and yet, also unaware of the existence of IM, forex, or alternative ways of making money because their good marks get them scholarships and job offers, so there is no desperation or urgent need to find different ways of making money.

People who don't finish school (high school, undergrad, PhD, or whatever), ironically, can sometimes be more intelligent and innovative than people who do. Take a look at Sergey Brin and Larry Page (Google guys) or even Bill Gates. That's just off the top of my head...I know there's quite a few more famous and successful people who are also dropouts.

That's pretty much dead on the money. Many creative people actually suffer terribly in school. It's smothering and borders on psychological abuse/torture.

I was (and am) the rebel in a family full of scholarly suck asses.

You know why I didn't finish college? Because at some point in time, I realized it was for suckers (no offense to anyone in school).

I knew there was a better way. I just knew it.

    And I was right!

Finally, after quite a few years of researching, pulling hair, long nights, lost relationships, and many energy drinks (this was in the earlier part of this decade) I found my IM calling, and I've never looked back at school since.

I can tell you right now, that I absolutely can't even fathom wasting any years of my life on school at this point in time (I'm 27), it would be too much of a setback.

All of my degreed friends and family?

Yeah, I get a call at least once a month from any one of them who needs a job, money, tips to break into the IM world, etc....

I just quietly smile to myself

I think that the idea that someone had found such a good way to make money that they didn't mind dropping out of school to pursue it is a good angle for a sales letter - so those that fit in that category use it (and probably others that simply invent their 'life story').

Another angle is the "If a dropout can do this well, think of how well an educated person like yourself would do". I've seen this one many times.

I currently work for a university, and since I have my benefits, I am just being enrolled into not only one, but two masters degrees. If I don't like the second one, I'll go into doctorate right after the first masters.

But I believe any Internet Marketers would have bigger library in their hard drives than my colleagues.

I just personally love receiving both types of education -- street smart (IM) and school work. Also, since I speak English as a second language, I feel my formal education is helping me.

I definitely wouldn't call us all drop outs. Although there are always exceptions to the rule. I have a BM and MBA degree, so the answer to your question is a definite... NO.

I believe what you are reading is that you don't have to be terribly smart to make it online. The sales letter was probably attempting to illustrate that the program is so simple that it doesn't take a degree to succeed.

I have to agree with this.

For years, I worked for a University targeted towards adults, and I just couldn't get past the fact that so many people who had been in the workforce for 20-30 years were coming back to college to get their degree. They were already accomplished in their fields, but for some reason, their employers were requiring that they get a degree just to keep their jobs.

The idea that someone fresh out of college is more qualified across the board for a given job than someone who has done the job for 20 years is laughable, in my opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed college, but I struggle to think of specific and useful things that I "learned" while there. Equating the amount of education someone has with how "smart" they are is pretty ridiculous.

For all the Bill Gates and Allen Says out there their are even more drop-outs who are flipping burgers.

Unless you want to be a doctor (don't know many drop-outs that are doctors) you don't need schooling but like Kevin said, I had a blast partying--err--studying in college. I did somehow finish but my degree is in political science which is the collegiate equivalent of dropping out.

It's all up to the individual and their drive to succeed that will make them successful no matter what field they enter (banking, real estate, entrepreneurship, etc.).

Well I hate to disappoint you but I didn't drop out! However, I found out in high school that most of the people who were teaching us couldn't function in a competitive environment. So, it became difficult for me to follow them all the time, because I had to find out what works for me, under the gun.

I have no problems with teachers if they are good. My grandfather was a farmer. He used to say, there is nothing wrong with being a farmer, if you are a good one.

He started with one acre and ended up with 400. He dropped out of high school and never looked back!

Then I had a look at for what I really wanted to learn.. How to become FREE. They sure don't teach that at college or University.

So happily I taught myself.. Alternative Health, Internet Marketing and the PT lifestyle.. A million dollar education no University will teach

I tried going to college (actually my parents forced me to go cause I was getting into trouble) when I was 19 and I flunked out.

On a whim when I was 26 I applied to some university and got accepted (I impressed the right people in interviews) and liked it enough that I got my bachelors and masters in business.

I'm not sure what category that puts me in.

dropped out, went back and flunked out, went back and got a couple degrees.

I have a weird background. I am a semi-dropout somehow. I studied to become a Charted Accountant but dropped out the last 6 months before finishing my degree. Why? Because of affiliate marketing. I made a lot of money and realized that I can live my dreams and don't have to waist my life in front of books and numbers. Then I went and finished my degree plus my honors in Marketing which fits perfectly into my IM career! It's marketing baby yeah!

I did just enough to graduate from high school...

I hated school so much that it would frustrate me to the point of having panic attacks.

I had very few teachers that I thought were mentally superior to me and my peers, which made it very difficult for me to respect them as qualified/worthy teachers.

With the exception of 2 or 3 classes--the material was too basic, uninteresting, and taught without passion.

I spent my entire time in class flirting with girls--because it would keep me from staring at the clock.

I recently graduated with a degree in Organizational/Interpersonal Communication. While I agree that a lot of the classes I took were pointless, my time at college was a great learning experience. I think a lot of it has to do with "social learning". The parties were fun too. So much fun that I actually spent an extra year getting that degree. SUPER SENIOR BABY!

I will say that the price of a college education in the states is getting ridiculous though. The amount of money that I owe in student loans is intimidating to say the least. In fact, these hefty loans are one of the reasons I ventured into IM.

After moving to California from Ohio (where I went to college), I kind of regret not attending school here though. It is WAYYYYY cheap to go to college here compared to most of the other states. Of course we are basically broke as a state at this point, but hey, the education is CHEAP!:p

Also, I think a lot of the "dropout turns billionaire" stories are played out sales pitches. At the same time, school isn't for everyone and is not an indicator of success by any means.

Dropped out of high school when I was 16... not for Internet marketing mind you, I didn't even know this little world existed back then. My life, so far, basically reads like a bad sales letter...

To keep the post as short as possible, I dropped out of school because it was boring and I didn't want to wake up at 6AM... yeah, seriously. The guidance counselor said my reasoning was super-lame and followed up with:

"If you could choose between havin' fun and makin' 5 figures a year or just doing your job and makin' 6 figures a year, which would you choose?"

Of course I was a smart ass and said "Who says you can't have fun and make 7 figures a year?"... I didn't even know it was possible at the time, I just felt like bein' a smart ass because I had already decided I was gonna' drop out.

Fast forward 3 years and I discover the world of Internet marketing... after seeing people like Frank Kern and Jason Moffatt kickin' ass I knew it was possible to make crazy amounts o' cash and actually have fun doin' it. It's almost like that fate thing you always hear about; I (we all) have the opportunity to make 7 figures a year, I don't have to wake up at 6AM unless I choose to and I get to have fun the whole time.

Hey, I told you it read like a bad sales letter! Clickbank screenshots that show me making 7 bajillion dollars per day to follow... lol.

I am a College dropout. I made it a year and 1/4 before calling it quits. Of course my Blood Alcohol Content(BAC) was higher than my Grade Point Average(GPA), but that's another story.

By age 26 I had already quit college, served 4 years in the military and was working in manufacturing locally making more than my "college friends".

Yeah, I worked my ass off as I still do today, but my "lack of education" taught me to work hard...which transcends to IM. I never got anything handed to me so I learned very young to work hard for what I want. Working hard AND smart is a habit, and not something everyone has, but it can be developed.

So I guess for me, the answer is YES, IM is for dropouts

I am highly optimistic that I'll make at least enough money to eat from setting up 'sales traps' on the Internet.

I have my MBA and spent 30 years in corporate life. I would like nothing better than to drop out and make money on the internet. I admire the intellect and savvy of many whom I have read here. If I knew 1% of the collective I think I could do quite well.

I have a degree from a fancy school (US News & World Reports top 5 every year). I was also valedictorian in high school, but the principal had to fabricate a doctor's note because I skipped so much school that I technically shouldn't have graduated. :-)

I firmly believe that school is no place for children, so I'll be homeschooling my son (and any future kids we have...).

    Love,

    Hey,

I think it all about psychology and the way it
appeals to a LOT of people.

Online marketing is almost like college:

You go through a learning curve, you fail, you move on, you fail,
you move on and so forth.

With today`s imense amount of information and hypes,
it is easy to believe that success will come easy just
by sending out a few ads.

No matter what you do and what you want to succeed at,
you got to become a professional. That is for everyone
embarking in the online world of marketing.

Keep on going, more determined drop
outs will make more money online than ever before

    Eirik.

I was at uni when i started and as i was pretty good academically i didnt need to study as many as most so got myself going from the library.

At the moment though im shattered from helping lots of people that have been made redundant during the current recession start their own online business and the majority are well educated people which is quite different from what we usually expect isnt it?

for example ive just started someone up - showing them how to start with a blog and basic squeeze page in a niche that they worked from in london. Remember thats the best bit about this business if you have a skill why not you it.

You think of bill gates and a smile comes across your face well he was just a computer nerd that experimented with the talents he had think about what you have and bingo another drop out has an online career!

If people are not academically minded, then they will find alternative means of making money. IM are not all drop outs. I'm a director of learning in Mathematics. Hope it makes sense.

The biggest skill in life is being able to spot opportunities when they come around (plural because opportunities come around everyday if your looking for them) and having the courage and confidence to grasp them with both hands.

It's a dangerous life style though because things can go horribly wrong...

The successful entrepreneur knows this and is prepared to take the risk and live with the consequences, as long as you keep taking opportunity eventually you will hit one that goes beautifully right.

Then each new opportunity is better managed because you have a blueprint for what worked.

So schools should teach people to spot a real opportunity and not a turd disguised as an opportunity

Dropping out just gives you more time to become successful.

I went to university for 2 years for a physics degree then called it quits - a lot of good that does now

i "dropped out" so to speak.

I would be a fool if NOT...i am sitting at home enjoying what i do, and i make more money than in your regular 8-5 job working for OTHERS

Look at the currently richest people. Are all those your typical "conformists"?

I dont think so. I think the richest and most successful people are the entrepreneurs, the people who did NOT care about how things usually go. People who did their thing and realized their ideas.

I dont want to know how many people have their degree and studied years and years, just to sit in some lame office or bank now...serving ME when i cash in my checks I feel bad for them.

Yes, i "dropped" out, but this was looooong before people even knew about the internet/IM. I dropped out and started programming and got a job as a software engineer. From that point of view i dont really regret it.
