Local Marketing via web for my day job

I've done some internet marketing, on the side, over the past 3 or 4 years and made a little bit of money at it. Problem is, I just can't seem to stick with it because my day job demands more attention. I work for a large provider of payment processing. It's a typical sales job. Phone prospecting, cold calling, and all the other stuff that sales people hate doing (besides actually selling). Business is okay but could be much better with more leads.

I've recently been reading a lot of Dan Kennedy material and he talks a lot about how prospecting, in traditional ways, is a TERRIBLE way to gain business in the "New Economy." Prospecting sucks. He says you have to make yourself an expert in your field. Write a book, public speaking, blog, write a column for the local newspaper etc... Then suddenly you become the authority in your given field, and people seek you, instead of the opposite.

I want to use my bit of IM experience to promote myself on the web. I can think of many topics in my business to write about. I was thinking about putting up some sort of squeeze page and then sending out a "free report" of some sorts to those that requested info.

Here are the problems/questions I'm encountering:

1. there are many keywords that one could potentially search for when they are needing payment processing, or if they're seeking a new provider. For example, they could search: payment processing, merchant account, merchant services, etc.... There are quite a few combinations that I can come up with. How do I target all of them??? I'm used to targeting 1 specific keyword for a clickbank product.

2. I don't necessarily want to rank for these keywords, when ANYONE in the country searches for them. I'm only interested in Local businesss, within say 50-100 miles. Ranking nationally for "merchant account" could be quite difficult and expensive. I only want to rank when someone in my area searches for that term. With that said, do I need to be targeting keywords like "keyword city, state"?

3. When I look at these keywords in keyword tool, the searches are so low that it doesnt even show any data. Is it worth my time to undertake this project?

Or should I try a different approach altogether?

Sorry for the lengthy post. I've been brainstorming over the past couple days and I'm just trying to figure out how to put it all together. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

What are you intrested in? Other than payment processing? Fitness? Golf? Cars?

If you pick a niche that you truly love, this will be a whole lot easier.

A tip I do like to give out though, is 'plan your business round your life, not your life around your business.'

That's why my next goal, is to make/save enough money so I can go train in a muay thai camp in thailand - for 4-6 months. That will probably cost about $15'000, but I know I can do that.
