Speeding Up My Website

I'm having some issues with my hosting provider (Host Gator), in that they are saying my website "was causing high loading issues on the server. Due to this affecting all of the other accounts on the system, we had to take immediate action for the health of the server."

So my site was taken down for a few hours and i;ve been trying to sort things out. IT's back online now, but they are saying I have too many plugins (i've since removed most) and they directed me to a site called GTmetrix in order to improve the performance of my site. Problem is, i don't know what any of this stuff means. Is anyone able to help me please?

I have currently got the W3 Total Cache plugin activated.

      Have you got any special applications or resources added to your site as well?

      Also, take a quick screen of your html on all your pages ... it's not impossible for hackers to insert code there which may cause all kinds of havoc (I had one of my sites hacked before).

    I get around 75 visitors per day.

    It would be better you upgrade to atleast VPS or dedicated server so it can support and will not influence the whole server and affecting others. Because Dedicated Server work independent .

    Google has a thing where you can check your page speed and it goes on to suggest ways to correct some of the issues:

    Like JerrickYeoh said, it's probably time to go VPS at the very least. There's really a lot of issues with shared hosting when you reach a certain point.

      Shared hosting like HostGator is good to kick off, but once you start pushing heavy traffic to your sites, the performance will suffer and this can affect your conversion rates.

      Best to look into VPS options. Beyondhosting.net and KnownHost are two main ones I'm familiar with and both are very reliable.

        Speed of loading won't be the issue so although you can speed you site up it probably won't do anything to help the issue with your hosting... there are 2 totally separate issue here so i'll cover both

        Before you move your site you can try 2 things

        1. Install W3 Total cache - which you've done
        2 sign up for a free cloud flare account

        Both those will speed up your site considerably..

        HOWEVER I suspect that not the issue. If you are affecting the server I think you have too many processes running at once..

        How many plugins do you have active? nobady ever needs more that about 6 if you are using more than that then ask yourself do you really need them I would be prepared to bet that one of them is causing the issue

    Make sure you get rid of any plugins you dont need and use. Delete them completely from your site. This will help speed up things a bit.

    Move over to a better host. A host that doesn't limit you in the amount of plugins? I mean what's that all about.

    Where do you live and where is the server located? It could just be that you and the server are to far apart, hence it feels like it is loading slow for you.

    Just checked your website out and it's loading quite smoothly, keep running that plugin in the background.

    With only 75 visits a day theres no reason to move to a VPS, I think that's over kill. Definitely sounds like you have too many plugins or maybe 1 plugin in particular that's causing issues.

    I went through that with hostgator. At the time I ran an article directory using wordpress that seemed to attract every spam bot in the world. It was causing a high load time for me. They suggested to me:

    a) Block heavy users of your site, if any, that may be causing excessive load.
    b) Optimize scripts (php, etc) that may be consuming a large amount of cpu or RAM
    c) Upgrade to a dedicated server; your site may have outgrown a shared environment.

    At the time I was one of those "plugin-happy" people who had large amounts of plugins on my site. I reduced the plugins, installed the W3 cache plugin and it seemed to help.

    But then another one of my sites used php link directory and that caused a high load.

    From Hostgator "Generally this is caused by a specific bot causing traffic across all our your sites (in which case you may be able to create a robots.txt to affect this, or if caused by a site-map system, slow down how many requests are made), or you simply have far too many CPU intensive sites under this same account."

    So this in turn made me realize that if you are going to have a site that is resource intensive (it is not about the amount of people coming to your site, it is about the resources that the particular script uses to function), plus grabbing info from FB, Twitter and other outside sources, you may need to upgrade to VPS hosting or a dedicated server.

    I don't think speed is to much of an issue, look at Pingdom Tools

    HG can handle 1000's of uniques/day on a shared account, no need to upgrade.

    Look in the HG cpanel options and make sure that you are using compression, that will help.
