Hello,

If I build a site that ranks very well for particular keywords and planned to build another site to rank for the same, or similar keywords for the purpose of driving traffic to my main site. Are there measures in place by Google to prevent this and stop someone dominating a particular niche?

Yes, you'll never get the .com .net and.org ranking well if you own all 3 .. google do not like this in the slightest.

(it's been confirmed by a google rep so it's not hearsay)

I've heard of people doing it, but I don't think the penalties are worth it IMO.

If your two sites have domain privacy, are hosted on different IPs, and don't share a google analytics account, then there's no way for G to know they have the same owner.

Google cant stop you from doing this. You can just change the email and name for new domain registration and Google will never know they are from same author and you will be safe from the penalty if any

    This is all hearsay BS.

I have seen companies and SEO's dominate page one with 2 or 3 different sites.

Everyone is guessing and saying what they heard from a Google rep.

I've seen it done before. It's definitely possible.

I would think as long as you use different IP Addresses, you would be okay.

They don't know your domains if you don't leave footprints.

    Use:

    Private Whois
    Different Class-C IP adress
    Different design
No footprints on websites like contact adress

    and you are fine...

Sorry to bump an older thread, but I was wondering if I was having this issue. I had a site ranking in the top spot for quite a while for a long-tail term (EMD). I had a similar niche containing a broader topic and felt that by including this same keyword on my larger site that I would become more of an authority. I do not have anything private and both sites are on the same IP.

In summary, one is keywordname.net and the other is brandedhomepage.com/keywordname. I have seen my rankings for the previously high ranking site drop. Is this because over promoting on two different sites?

Should I remove the content on one site, or 301 it to the good site?
