How do you get reviews and testimonials?

I am (aspiring to be) a vendor in a sub-niche of health, and understand the importance of having testimonials and reviews of my product on my sales/squeeze page before expecting people to buy. Competitors have "thank you" emails from customers, for example, that they display on their pages.

My question is, if you are just launching your product, how do you get (legitimate) customer reviews and testimonials?

I would like to think that everyone doesn't just pay for these but understand that this is probably what happens (which is sad but understandable).

Give your product to some people for free and ask them for a review in return.

I contact my marketing friends and give it to them and ask nicely for a review or criticism. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals and they'll become part of your network that you can bounce ideas off one another. A mastermind, if you will.

Like IMHunter said, if you're just launching it's best to give your product away for free in exchange for reviews (not just to anyone but of course someone who has use for the product). Or if you have a few clients already, it doesn't hurt to ask nicely for reviews.

I pay people and then I make them sign agreements saying, if they admit they got paid for writing a review, they have to pay me 500k per word. Works every time.

Tell your customers that you have a special and valuable gift for them if they can send in a testimonial about the product that you're selling them. After they've sent in their testimonial, send out the free gift to these people.

pay for a review at sponsored reviews. Asking people to be a tester usually results in poor reviews. Not poor as in your stuff sucks, but poor as in it looks like a 3rd grader wrote it...or it looks like said review is blowing sunshine up your a$$.

If you don't wanna pay for a review, you can ask your trusted affiliates, friends, or satisfied customers to sample and review your product/service.

Once you do find some good reviewers, keep their contact information so that you can have them review your future products as well.

Giving away a few free trials is the best way for me. (and of coarse delivering a great product or service)
