How to explode your sales by becoming an expert at upselling and cross-sellin in practically no time

Hey folks. Been a while since I've been on the forum (sad life of a student). So while my mum is ranting away about the Indian government, I thought I'd share something I found.

Now I'm pretty sure most of you know about Amazon.com. And while I don't really know the exact figures, Amazon.com easily rakes in hundreds of millions, at bare minimum, yearly. Sure, it's easy for them because they have experts working to bring in truckloads of traffic to their site and what not. But it is evident that their marketers are amazing at what they do. Plus, they have mastered the art of up selling and cross selling to perfection, which is why they have such HUGE profit margins! And if you want to become a master at doing this to seriously rake in profits, it's gonna be good for you if you model after them.

Here is what you would see if you went to Amazon.com and searched for a brand of guitars.
Let's say you type Fender Starcaster. You'll land on the guitar's product page where there's a description and what not. Well that's not what I want you to focus on.

Here's the link so that it's easier for you to see what I'm talking about.

Amazon.com: Fender Starcaster Strat Pack Electric...Amazon.com: Fender Starcaster Strat Pack Electric... (no affiliate link or anything along those lines... so if you buy the guitar or anything else, I won't be getting any commission)

Once you're on the page, scroll down past the production description part till you reach the "Buy this product and related accessories" portion.

Now in this case, there are just 2 additional products but in many cases there are loads more! You see how Amazon.com has no qualms about upselling? And this is before the initial purchase is even guaranteed!

As for the cross selling part. Just below the upselling portion, there is an entire row of related products. It's headlined as "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought".

Now there is a simple reason behind why Amazon.com are so open about upselling and cross-selling. They want to maximise their profits! It's a basic econs theory as well. All firms have one main objective, to maximise profits. You, as a business owner, should be aiming to do the same.

Here's a simple way you can cross-sell products to people who buy from you. After the purchase is made, wait for a couple of days so that they can atleast evaluate the quality of your work. On the second day, send them an email thanking them for the purchase. And at the end of the email, include a list of complementing products (with a brief description). Of course you may have your own special way of cross-selling. This is just one practical method of implementing it.

PS: don't bother asking me for stats. This is just a theory based on briefly checking out Amazon.com's marketing methods.
