What do you want to see in an article directory?

I intend to start a general article directory. These types of sites come and go, with only a few consistently being talked about and recommended. I want mine to be among the ones that last.

So I come here to ask: what features do you prefer in directories? And as far as quality control goes, what types of policies would you want/not want to see? For example, say self serving links weren't allowed in the article itself, but could instead be placed in a bio box/authors profile page/etc?

I'm afraid it's not the answer you want to hear at all, but what I want to see is something like a decade-long-established reputation, together with the resulting certainty that ezine publishers and webmasters of high-quality sites all instinctively look there as their first port of call when sourcing their content: that is what article directories exist for, after all. All the other things I'd quite like to see are so far behind that criterion, in terms of their importance, as not really to be worth mentioning at all.

Apologies for a disappointing answer. Here's the compensation: these threads may also help you ...

The total lack of a reputation is an issue that I've been somewhat concerned with. I think I can make it unique enough from other directories. It's just a matter of getting people to take it seriously. But if I can pull that off I figure I can ultimately be successful with this.

I wish you well with it, if you try.

I suspect, if you want to attract serious article marketers (i.e. rather than only people who try to use article directories as a traffic source or for the backlinks), that it'll be just a matter of getting publishers of ezines and webmasters to take it seriously.

Anyway, as you'll see, there are several posts in the threads mentioned above from Warriors who are/were article directory owners, so doubtless there'll be some insights there.

I don't want to rain on your parade but starting an article directory now would be like starting a vaccum tube company right after the transister revolution started sweeping the marketplace. I'd seriously reconsider and look for a trend on the upswing, not the down. Good luck.
