Legal action for impinging trademark in domain name - a trap for Newb's
The website www.ihomeclockradio.net was built in December last year when I was an absolute Newb. I was given the keyword to register the domain which I did (without question...total newb) and a website was subsequently built....all good.
That was until yesterday when I received notice (very official legal documents) that the owner of the trademark had began a legal action against me. To cut a long story short they had applied to have the domain name transfered to them.....thankfully no other action is being taken against me.
I notice there are many adsense microniche site builders on the forum who still build websites based on trademarked terms such as brands
or models
I thought I would post this story so other Newb's don't make the same mistake. I'm just glad I learnt this lesson early rather than 2-3 years down the track when the domain is worth a lot more
In future I will be checking any domain names I am thinking of registering for trademarks. Don't just take the site builders advice that it will "be ok"
Also I would be interested to hear comments from anyone else who has experienced the same thing?
