My Biggest Mistake-Newbies Learn From This!

Since I don't have a professional counselor, I thought I would use the Warrior Forum.

I started in 2002 with absolutely no computer knowledge using Plug In Profits. After about 3 months, I had a list of 350 or so people and one $65 dollar sale.

However, I got a new job in Florida which was going to be very time consuming so I gave up the internet and my small but growing list.

Fast forward to 2012 and I have been online full-time for over 2 and a half years but have no list. The recent update completely hammered my business because I was relying totally on organic Google traffic.

So here I am lamenting not sticking with my list building. I can only imagine how many subscribers I would have in 10 years.

If you are a newbie, concentrate on list building so you have an asset that no one can ever take from you.

Thats right, most successful affiliate marketers and super affiliates have their own super targeted opt-in list. If you want to multiply your marketing efforts, this is the best way to do it.

Since you are the one generating all the traffic to affiliate program, make sure you get the chance to use that traffic over and over again. If you send 100 targeted visitors to the affiliate product, and only 1 out of that 100 purchases the product, what happens to the other 99 visitors? You've lost them forever if you did not capture their contact information

Listbuilding when done right is probably the one method I'd say that guarantees you'll be successful online.

sorry to hear that you have been hammered by google

you are right though the list is certainly the way to go but most importantly "slow and steady" wins the race

i always tell people not to rely on google for most of there income but do most people listen?

    NO

i think 99% of the time the people who end up realizing list building is the best way to go are the ones that have been in your position, and they have been hit hard which then makes them realize that there business is not really a business as your relying on the wims of googles to put food on your table

the other 1% which i would say i am in are the ones which havent exactly had a bad experience with getting hammered by google but have learned by the mistakes of others not our own

i heard too many stories from others thats why i started focusing 80% of my efforts on building my lists

so the moral of the story is to leanr by the mistakes of others as much as you can not learn by your own mistakes

theres nothing wrong with relying on google for your income intially when you start making money but i always say once you start making around $500 - $1000 a month with adsense, amazon, cpa etc etc then start building a list because you will then have a lot more skills and experience and results which you can leverage to help you build a list

but you must of course have some knowledge first that you can teach others otherwise it will just be a case of the blind leading the blind which happens a lot in IM

hope you recover from this though virtual principal, keep ploughing through :-)

This isn't only great advice, but the most important aspect of Internet Marketing. Making sure you have a list is great, but the most important thing everyone should take from this is you don't want to put all your eggs in one basket. I have several things I do and several backup plans just in case something goes wrong. As you said all it takes is something like google saying.. you know what I don't like this site anymore and you could go from thousands a day to literally nothing.

I totally ignored all advice to build a list when I was starting out so kudos to you for pushing the message - I just hope people listen.

For some reason, even though loads of people would say to me "the money is in the list" I never listened as a newbie.

Luckily, I figured it out well before Google started making big changes so I managed to build my list without any effect on my business at that time.

But it's certainly a lesson that everyone should take on board - don't build your business relying on one area - especially an area like Google where they can literally pull the plug on your overnight.

Instead, build a list or build any kind of business that you have complete control over - or at least 90% control over.

Thanks for taking the time to share this. I'm sure it will positively impact many people. We don't typically think of a list as a safe alternative to the craziness going on on with Google & YouTube slaps and account bans.

Just this week I sent an email to my subscribers telling of so many marketers having regrets of not starting their online businesses with list building.

And here you did start the right way but got sidetracked. I'm sorry. That's hard to take.

Well, you can use your energy to move forward and start over!

You're all the more wiser and can use that experience to propel you forward!

    Wishing you all the best.

That's why it is good to create several sources of income. If you solely rely on one source, your risk of ruin is a lot higher.

You never know what's going to happen tomorrow with Google. Your best call is to have multiple sources of income.

Yes I agree, but I think it takes time to build the skills to obtain a list. I have been online for a year now and can finally grap how I can build a list and monetize in a specific niche.

    I feel your pain.

It took me 6 months of hard work and having very little to show for it before I realized the important of list building.

Not building a list is definitely the biggest mistake of IM.

The first chapter of the ebook that I wrote a few weeks ago is titled "My Biggest Mistake".

Guess what my biggest mistake was? NOT building a list!

Start building your list now, buddy.

    It is never too late.

    All the best.

Ok, I'll be sure and listen to something else.

Seriously, I learned quickly that driving traffic to affiliate programs without first getting them on my list was not the way to go. I'm building my list now and THEN I'll send them offers.

This was mentioned a few times, and seemingly ignored.

But "starting your list at the beginning" of your IM journey means building your list once you have skills and working knowledge/experience to offer your subscribers, right??

Or is this sort of a gray area?

What's odd is, considering the overwhelming consensus that list building is one of the more important strategies in building an IM business, there is no "List Building" forum section here in WarriorForum.

especially with all the google updates these days too, its a very wise move to be in complete control over your income instead of google calling the shots as ive heard that a lot of people have been effected

it took me over 2 years to really start building a list properly and yes i do agree not starting it sooner

    VP,
    Great post.
Virtually every successful internet marketer says they wish they started building their list sooner.
And most unsuccessful ones, never built a list at all!

I'm here to say list building doesn't have to be hard, and doesn't have to be slow.

And once you get going, if done ethically and properly, the money follows.

that is a too bad to hear man, and again it is proven that you "shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket"

I am sure you can back on track when you have been as successfull as you, you will find a way... this is a defining moment in your career, and how you face the challenge defines you as man.

    take care

Sorry that you are getting hammered by Google. The opposite must be happening to some people. Search engine rankings are temporary; you can recover.

Any lost money is bad for the marketer. So...keep using that list, as I am sure you are now!

OH, I feel your pain! If I had grown a list over four years ago, I could be working a lot less hours now...I think (although not sure I would have slowed at all). There are always new things daily in the internet world. The creativity of WSOs just amazes me! But, yes! List-building is the foundation to having control that Google can't take away. It is insurance for your future to treat your list as friends and give them what you would want to see yourself. The golden goose is building a list of people who know, like, trust and follow you.
