Comments on your blog

I am finid I am receiving over 300 spam comments a day to my blog. Fortunately my spam filter is doing a good job. But I also get around 100 per day that are not yet being picked up by the filter.

To be honest I am just deleting them because it takes so long to go through them all. So it got me thinking would it be best to not have the leave a comment function at all. My blog is new and only getting around 20 hits per day so I know they cant be real comments!

Do you allow comments on your blog and are you faced with the same issues? At the moment it feels like if I do turn the comments off then I am spoiling it for the real readers and myself.

  • If your just deleting them then you might as well just turn it off. Are you using askimet?

Jeez that sounds like a nightmare - I don't seem to have that sort of problem (fingers crossed I never will) I get the odd few here or there but that sounds serious dude - I'd look into getting some help from a plugin or something to limit that.

I think the posts must be coming via my RSS feeds. I am not overly worried at the moment but I am concerned when or if my site gets busy.

Switch to Facebook comments.. You wont have that problem and you will add a viral effect to your posts comments.. My theme has it pre installed but I'm sure there's a plugin.. if not just go developers.facebook.com and click the "comments" feature under social plug ins.
It's super easy and well worth it

Do NOT disable comments! Once readers actually start posting legitimate comments, your legit comments to spam comments ratio will soar. If readers see a bunch of people commenting on your posts, they will be inclined to comment as well.

Also, having a dialogue between you and your readers is an excellent way to increase your credibility. Your readers will like and trust you more if you actually have a conversation with them (even if this "conversation" is simply one comment from each of you!). People will want to actually talk to the marketer that they will give their money to, and disabling comments will not allow this.

Also, the spam filter I am using called "Spam Free Wordpress". I love it. I started getting around 10 - 20 spam comments per day after my site was a week old. After installing this, I have not seem one spam comment slip through. If you are not using this, definitely try it to see if it works for you. I know it works for me .

      Good luck!

That is a great idea! I have only noticed a couple marketers using this on their blogs, but once I create my facebook page, I will be sure to use this feature. It is a great way to combine your blog and your facebook.

Why would you want to do that? You end up with absolutely no comment content on your site that can be indexed by the search engines and you are handing over all your comments to Facebook so when the day comes and they no longer exist, neither does any of the content your readers have created.

Not the best solution in my opinion. Why go to the trouble of having a blog if you are going to give half of your content to Facebook?

This tends to happen to me when I build a website on a very lucrative niche like dieting, health, etc. On those sites I just turn off commenting, unless you really build the authority go-to site for the niche, in which case you should be making enough to pay someone to help weed out spam.

Haha, maybe you can just ask some of the members here to stop spamming you

yea I would look into a plugin to sort it out. But if you find that you get hardly any genuine comments you may as well just turn it off

I get spam comments too. Not 300 a day, but these people seem to know how to use there spam software to creep onto my blog.

Perhaps you could turn on the feature that lets you either approve or reject comments made by visitors who have never left a comment before.

This may not entirely solve your problem, but at least all that spam will not be in plain view to everyone on your blog.

I have to prove comments to my blog but as some of you suggest it might be an idea to turn the comment feature off fora while until I get decent traffic.

Now traffic there is my other issue!!!

Facebook comments aren't the best way to go here. Like WillR said, these comments will not do you any favours with Google because it's not on your site, it's on Facebook.

A better solution would be to find a plugin that uses the Wordpress comments system itself but requires visitors to "authenticate" with a social media site. That way you will cut down on spam but will get your comment content benefits

    Hope that helps

If the comment function is hurting your blog, then I suggest try to eliminate it, but if you have a second though of doing so since comments is also a good way to gain traffic secure a more efficient filter.

I didn’t want to spend for the askmit subscription so I have been deleting comments as the come in. One site averages 1 spam comment a day, then suddenly today I got hit by 47 in one hour and they kept comming. Eeek, I ran to the forum to hunt down a solution. Found a thread that recommended a type of wordpress riddles and math text captcha plugin.

In the thread started by mbarty2010, it is recommended to change up the default riddles, but I installed this plugin without any modifications and it stopped the battering I was getting almost immediately.

(sorry, not enough posts to include a link)

I'd go with Facebook comments, since I'm not interested in the "Google" part of it, plus FB is not going down anytime soon.

I think your should turn off the commenting option for couple of months. And after that turn on and watch what happen.

I have the same but the spam filter is working well. I just mark them all as spam now and get rid. Mostly written by bots anyway. Shame because I would love to have real comments on the blog

I even had threats written by scammers

You can add a captcha plugin to your site to decrease the number of spam comments... Most of these comments are made with Scrapebox anyway and most people won't bother to break captchas (though there are ways to automate this using a captcha-breaking service or Captcha Sniper).

For example, this is a good plugin to include the captcha field in the comment form:

WordPress › SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam « WordPress Plugins

    Cheers,

It seems you got a serious problem there my friend i recommend getting some help or maybe even report the spam, use some plugins to decrease your amount of spams you get that might be the only solution to end the spamming.

    Kindest,

    Adan
